이장호 감독의 <무릎과 무릎 사이>(1984)는 ‘성애영화’가 유행 했던 1980년대 한국 대중영화 대표작 중 하나이다. 성애영화는 장르적 이유로 여성을 대상화한다는 문제를 촉발한다. 이에 따라 해당 장르는 시각의 주체로 상정된 남성, 그 대상적 존재인 여성, 그리고 젠더 및 가부장제 관련 문제를 야기 시킨다. 이러한 성애영화는 남성 관객의 성욕 자극만을 목적으로 두지 않는다는 점에서 ‘에로영화’와 구분되며, 그 경계적 요소로 감독의 의도가 무엇인지가 놓여 있다. 이와 같은 견지에서, <무릎과 무릎 사이>의 젠더재현 양상은 감독의 주제의식과 긴밀하다. 이장호 감독이 이 영화를 통해 전달하려는 것은 무분별한 서구 문화의 유입과 그 경계의 필요성이다. 이에 따라 영화는 ‘전통/서구’라는 이분법을 기축으로 한다. 그런데 이 영화는 서구적인 것을 부정적으로 그려내고 있으면서도 전통 그 자체를 고수해야 하는 가치로 내세우고 있지 않다. 그러면서 <무릎과 무릎 사이>는 잔존하는 가부장적 프레임을 유지하면서도 그것의 폐해를 동시에 재현한다는 점에서 이중적이다. 이러한 특성은 장르적 특징으로도 이어져, 영화는 여성의 신체를 전시하는 동시에 남성 인물 중 누구에게도 관객으로 하여금 이상적 동일시를 경험할 기회를 부여하지 않는다.

< Between The Knees > (1984), directed by Lee Jang-ho is one of the famous sexual/erotic movie in 80s. Such sexual/erotic genre was trouble with sexual objectification of women, so it made some problems related to a gender and patriarchy system. However when it comes to sexual movie, not just aiming at stimulation of sexual desire, it is differentiated from erotic or porno movie. The important thing separating those two parts is whether it cares about director's purpose or not in the movie. Therefore, as a sexual movie, this work is needed to be considered with what the director's thought is even when you want to analyze the aspect of gender and patriarchy system. Then, specifically what the director wanted to say was indiscriminate acceptance of foreign culture and the necessity of vigilance of it. To represent such things, the movie described a dichotomy, tradition verse foreign culture, the patriarchy system was regarded as tradition thing. In that moment the core is that the director did not regard the tradition as something needed to be pursued as well as foreign culture. Hence, even the movie still represented the residue of the patriarchy but simultaneously recognized harmful effect of that system either. Besides, such kind of cracked feature is combined with the sexual expressions through objectified women sexually and represented men as someone who never can't be identified ideally.
