푸코는 그리스인의 도덕을 ‘실존의 미학’이라 부르며 자신의 삶을 어떤 미학적 가치를 가진 하나의 작품으로 만들어가는 태도로 설명한다. 개인은 정해진 규칙을 따르는 것이 아니라, 자신의 삶에 스타일과 형식을 부여하며 도덕적 미학적 주체가 된다. 그리스인들은 ‘실존의 기술’로서 ‘자기 배려’라는 원리를 갖고 있었다. ‘자기 인식’이 타율적 근대의 주체 형성 방식이라면, ‘자기 배려’는 자율적 자아의 형성 원리이다. 그리고 진실은 단순한 ‘자기 인식’이 아닌, 자기 자신을 변화시키는 ‘자기 배려’의 기술을 통해 도달할 수 있다. ‘진실 말하기’라는 의미를 갖는 ‘파레시아(parrhesia)’가 푸코의 후기 철학에서 중요 개념으로 등장하는 것은 이러한 자율적 주체 형성 과정에 대한 관심에서 비롯된 것이다. 파레시아적 발언, 행위, 침묵은 다른 이들의 부정적 반응을 감수해야 하므로 용기를 필요로 한다. 특히 견유주의의 파레시아는 ‘또 다른 삶(vie autre)’의 양식을 보여준다. 견유주의자의 삶은 어떤 위험을 감수하고라도 반드시 진실을 말하는 도구로 사용되며, 불필요한 관습과 근거 없는 의견들을 환원시킨다. 또한 그들의 벌거벗은 삶은 인간의 삶에 가장 근원적인 것이 무엇인지 시험하는 기능을 갖는다. 푸코는 예술에서도 견유주의적 태도를 발견한다. 삶과 진실이 결합되며 나타나는 견유주의적 예술은 19세기에 출현한 ‘예술가의 삶’에 대한 관심과 관련이 있다. 예술가의 참된 삶은 ‘진리의 상태에 있는 예술’을 입증해 주는 것이다. 또한 근현대예술이 보여주는 존재의 ‘벗겨진 상태’는 견유주의가 영유한 미니멀한 삶의 양식과 통하는 것이다. 근현대예술은 실존의 환원이라는 점에서 반플라톤적이며, 기존의 형식에 대한 거부라는 점에서 반아리스토텔레스적이며, 문화의 합의(consensus)에 거부하므로 반문화적이다. 이것이 근현대예술이 가진 파레시아, 진실을 말하는 용기이다. 현대인은 자기 금욕과 자기희생을 중요시하는 종교적 도덕의 전통과 외부 법에서 도덕을 찾는 세속적 전통을 모두 물려받았다. 이러한 전통들이 부딪히면서 자기 실천은 부도덕, 이기주의, 혹은 규율과 타인에 대한 책임으로부터 도피하는 수단으로 나타났다. 하지만, 푸코가 말하는 자기 배려는 진리와 관계맺음으로 타자로 향하는 것이다. 자기 배려가 자신을 변형하는 것을 목적으로 삼는 ‘에토스제작적(ethopoetique)’인 것이지만, 동시에 타자와 인간성 전체에 대한 배려가 되어 ‘세계 형상의 변화’를 이끌어내는 것이다.

Foucault called the morality of the Greeks as ‘the aesthetics of existence’ and described it as an attitude for creating their life as an aesthetic work of art. A person does not follow established rules, but he gives style and form to his life and in that way he becomes ethic and aesthetic subject. The Greeks had the technology of ‘a care of the self’ as ‘the techne of existence’. If ‘a knowledge of the self’ is the principle of heteronomous subject in modern age, ‘a care of the self’ is the principle of autonomous subject. And the truth can be reached not through ‘a knowledge of the self’, but through ‘a care of the self’ that can transform oneself. Parrhesia which means ‘speaking the truth’, ‘frank speech’ emerges as an important concept in the later philosophy of Foucault, and it comes from his interest in the formation process of the autonomous subject. Parrhesiast’s speech, behavior, and silence require courage, because he has to endure the negative reactions of others. In particular, parrhesia of Cynicism shows the style of ‘another life’. Cynicist's life is used as an instrument of telling the truth at any risk, and reduced all pointless conventions and all superfluous opinions. His bare life also has a role of test to reveal what would be the most elementary in the life of human life. The Cynical art which is derived from the connection of life and truth, is related to the interest in the ‘artist’s life’ in the nineteenth century. The artist's true life must in some way be a manifestation of art itself in its truth. And the ‘laying bare existence’ in the modern art is linked to the minimal style of Cynicism. Modern art is anti-Platonic in that it is a reduction of bare existence, anti-Aristotelian in that it rejects every form of established art, and anti-cultural because it refuses to consensus of culture. This is the parrhesia of modern art, the courage to speak the truth. We inherited both the tradition of religious moral virtues that emphasize the abstinence and sacrifice, and the secular tradition of seeking morality from external law. As these traditions are encountered, the self-practice has changed into immorality, selfishness, or means of avoiding responsibility. However, Foucault’s care of the self is directed toward others by making a relationship with truth. Care of the self is ethopoetique, which has an intention to transform oneself, but at the same time, it cares about others and entire humanity, and can change the configuration of the world.
