한국의 역사에 있어 근대는 정치적으로나 문화적으로 처절한 격동의 시기였다. 열강들의 한국으로의 진출은 아직 개방되지 않아 다소 정체되어 있는 은둔국가 한국에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이럴 즈음 기독교의 선교를 목적으로 한 서양인 선교사들의 진출은 선교와 교육, 의료 등에서 더욱 두드러지는 모습으로 나타게 되었다. 특히 근대기 한국 건축에 나타난 미국 장로교 선교관련 건축은 그 수와 양을 고려해 볼 때 상당한 수효였다. 그러나 일제강점기 철도관사와 같이 공동주택 성격의 일본식 건축과 비교하면 상대적으로 적은 편이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한국의 선교 건축은 한국 전통건축이 근대 건축으로 발전하면서 다양한 부분에서 변화를 유도하였고 한국영토에 소재한 서양건축이라는 한 축을 이루었다. 본고는 한국의 근대건축에 지대한 영향을 끼친 선교기지의 건축과 건축활동에 대하여 고찰함으로서 서양의 건축의식과 건축이 한국의 건축에 끼친 영향을 규명하고자 하는 것이다. 특히 한말의 어려운 상황에서 한국인들이 어떻게 서양건축을 수용하였고 한국에 서양건축이 어떻게 자리하게 되었는가를 고찰함으로서 한국의 근대건축의 의미를 밝히는 중요한 내용이 될 것이라 기대된다.

The modern history of Korea is filled with political and cultural turmoil. The advances of the great world powers to Korea had a great effect on the secluded nation whose development was stagnating due to its lack of interaction with the rest of the world. The works of the western Christian missionaries in Korea during this time were conspicuous in the areas of missions, education and the medical attention they provided to the Koreans. Architectures related to the Presbyterian Church in the United States show themselves in abundant quantity during the modern era of Korean architecture. Although their numbers were relatively small compared to that of the apartment style Japanese architectures such as the railroad company residence of the Japanese colonial era, the missional architectures in Korea fostered many changes to the traditional Korean architecture during its transition to modern architecture. The missional architectures formed a part of standard as western architectures situated within Korean territory. This paper attempts to investigate the effects of western architectural practices and architectures on that of Korea by studying the mission stations whose architecture had a profound impact on Korean modern architecture. Investigating how the Koreans embraced western architecture during the difficult times of the Korean Empire and how this foreign architecture was positioned in Korea will be an valuable contribution to understanding the meaning of the Korean modern architecture.
