이 논문의 목적은 아우구스티누스 시간의 문제에서 교육의 의미를 찾는 것이다. 아우구스티누스는 시간을 변화와 분열(distentio)의 주체자로 생각하였다. 아우구스티누스는 이 시간의 문제를 진리에 기초한 의식 활동(consciousness)으로 극복하려고 하였다. 아우구스티누스에 따르면 시간은 존재에서 비존재로의 전환이기 때문에 시간을 객관적으로 측정할 수 없고, 의식 활동으로 인해 기억 속에서 인식된다고 본다. 그러나 시간의 분열성은 의식 활동으로 모아진 시간마저 분열시킨다. 이 흩어지는 시간을 모우기 위해 아우구스티누스는 ‘집중’(Intentio)할 것을 주장한다. 집중한다는 것은 영원, 그 자체이신 신(神)과 영원을 닮은 진리를 중심으로 의식활동을 펼치는 것으로, 신과 진리를 중심으로 사유(thinking)하고 의지(willness)하는 것을 의미한다. 무엇을 사유하고 원하느냐에 따라 시간의 크기와 질은 달라진다. 아우구스티누스의 시간문제 속에서 교육은 ‘지혜와 기쁨의 교육’으로 전개된다. 먼저, 아우구스티누스의 기억의 의미를 분석하였다. 기억 안에는 ‘사유’와 ‘의지’의 기능뿐 아니라 ‘다양한 존재의 층들’이 있다. 특별히 아우구스티누스의 기억 안에는 신적 지혜(sapientia)가 있는데, 이것은 신적 조명으로 인해 기억 안에서 발견된다. 이 신적 지혜에 따라 세계와 사물을 평가할 때 세계 사물의 지식은 지혜적 지식이 된다. 기억 안에는 의지가 있다. 의지는 기쁨의 대상을 향해 나아가는 움직임이다. 참된 기쁨은 진리 안에서만 발견된다. 지혜의 교육은 진리에 기초하여 사유하는 것을 뜻하며, 기쁨의 교육은 참된 기쁨의 대상인 진리와 신(神)을 향해 나아가게 하는 것을 뜻한다. 기쁨과 지혜의 교육으로 학생들은 삶의 의미를 배우며, 진리에 기초하여 삶을 형성할 수 있는 힘을 소유하게 된다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of an education in the question of Augustine's time. Augustine regarded a time as a change or distortion(distentio). Human has experienced the division of his being because of the weakness of the time. Augustine tried to overcome the time's problems through the intention(intentio). According to him, doing intention is to align our consciousness on the God who is the eternity itself and the truth resembling the eternity. That is, it means that our thinking and willness focus on the God and the truth. In the problem of Augustine's time, the characters of the education is an wisdom and joyfulness. To explore these, we need to know Augustine's memory(memoria). In our memories there are layers of various beings as well as functions of thinking and willness. In particular, there is wisdom about God in our memories. Because of the illumination of God's light, we find the wisdom in our memories. When the things of the world are evaluated by divine light, knowledge of the things becomes knowledge of wisdom. There is also willness in our memories. Willness is a movement toward joy. The education of wisdom means to think according to the truth, and the education of joy means to love God and truth. By teaching the truth, students have the power to discover the meaning of their lives and to shape their lives.
