본고에서는 <주봉전>이 <서유기> 소재 ‘현장(玄奘)의 복수 이야기’와 여러모로 유사하다는 점에 착안하여 비교문학적인 고찰을 함으로써 <주봉전>의 <서유기> 수용 양상을 밝히고 그에 따른 의미를 탐구하였다. 우선 구성적 서사와 세부적 서사에 걸쳐 비교 검토를 진행하였다. 첫째는, 두 이야기의 구성적인 측면을 비교함으로써 <주봉전>의 갈등구조 및 플롯이 ‘현장의 복수 이야기’로부터 원용(援用)되었음을 추론하였다. 둘째는, 두 이야기에 활용된 구출과 환생(還生) 모티프를 검토함으로써 <주봉전>에서의 ‘옥염의 구출과 환생’은 ‘현장의 복수 이야기’에서의 ‘진광예(陳光蕊)의 구출과 환생’으로부터 유래하되, 그 창조적인 전용(轉用)의 결과물임을 입증하였다. 셋째는, <주봉전>이 ‘현장의 복수 이야기’로부터 ‘발가락 자르기’라는 특징적인 모티프를 수용(受容)하고 있음을 고찰하였다. 한편 <주봉전>의 <서유기> 수용이 지니는 의미는 두 가지로 논의되었다. 그 하나는 <주봉전>이 환상 서사인 <서유기>를 수용함으로써 독특한 복수서사의 구현이 이루어졌다는 점이다. 다른 하나는 <주봉전>이 <서유기> 소재 ‘현장의 복수 이야기’로부터 그 구출과 환생 모티프를 변용(變容)함으로써 ‘충절(忠節)’의 이념적 선양(宣揚)이라는 작품의 의미 지향을 부각시켰다는 점이다. 이상의 고찰을 통해 본고에서는 <주봉전>이 중국 신마소설(神魔小說)의 대표작인 <서유기>와 다방면에 걸쳐 관련을 맺고 있는 양상을 확인하였다. 한편 <주봉전>이 기존 서사인 <서유기>를 수용하면서도 그 독자적인 의미를 구축하고 있다는 사실도 알 수 있었다.

The study examines the relationship between Joobongjeon and Journey to the West under the assumption of a correlation between the two. Considerations on aspects of comparative literature started with findings of a similarity between Joobongjeon and the episode on revenge of Xuánzàng from Journey to the West, to explore these similarities in depth, acceptance patterns and meaning have been studied. To begin with, the paper analyzes similarities from aspects of plot and motif. First, the narratives structural resemblance infers that Joobongjeon cited the concept of revenge specifically from the episode, revenge of Xuánzàng from Journey to the West. Secondly, reviewing the motif of reincarnation in the two pieces of work reveals that the reincarnation of Ok-yeom in Joobongjeon took inspiration from the reincarnation of Jinkwangye(陳光蕊) in the chapter however with Joobongjeon’s slight alterations, interpreted and used the concept in an ingenious and novel manner. Thirdly, the study states that Joobongjeon accepted and referred to the motif of cutting toes in the episode of Journey to the West. Furthermore, the meaning of acceptance of Journey to the West in Joobongjeon is discussed in two perspectives. Joobongjeon adopted the concept of oriental fantasies illustrated in the Journey to the West to build unique narration on revenge. In addition, Joobongjeon diverted the motif of reincarnation from the episode to underline the thematic meaning behind the work, ideological loyalty. In conclusion, the study confirms numerous acceptance patterns of Journey to the West, the most well-known examples of Shenmo novels(神魔小說), in Joobongjeon. It accepted and adopted the concept of the existing narration of Journey to the West, but at the same time, constructed a unique meaning behind the narrative.
