본 연구는 양육시설을 퇴소한 청소년의 초기 자립경험을 이해하고자 시설을 퇴소한지 2년 미만의 청소년을 대상으로 심층면접을 통해 자료를 수집하여 도구적 질적 사례연구 방법을 사용하여 연구하였다. 4명의 사례를 통해 수집한 자료들을 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석을 실시하였다. 사례 간 분석을 통해 나타난 자립경험의 주요한 주제들은 ‘무기력한 현실과 실감나지 않는 미래’, ‘제한적인 진로탐색과 멘토링의 한계’, ‘예정된 떠밀림과 혼자됨의 외로움’, ‘형편껏 살아갈 공간을 찾는 험난한 여정’, ‘비빌 언덕이 없는 수급자의 딜레마와 경제적불안’, ‘지우고 싶지만 끊어낼 수 없는 시설에 대한 양가감정’, ‘심리적·경제적으로 아직 미 자립인 나’의 7가지 주제가 도출되었다. 본 연구에서는 시설 퇴소 청소년들은 퇴소 후 1~2년 안에 자립과 성인기 전환을 압축적으로 경험하고 있음을 밝히고, 퇴소 직후 초기 자립지원의 중요성과 퇴소 후 초기에 경험하는 자립의 어려움이 지속되지 않도록 퇴소 전과 후의 자립지원방안 및 유연한 정책의 필요성을 제언하였다.

In order to explore the early stages of independent living of adolescents who left residential care, instrumental case study was conducted by an in depth interview with 4 adolescents who left the facility within less than 2 years. Based on the collected data, an analysis on cases were carried out in two ways, which analyzed within cases and between cases. Findings showed that 7 topics were drawn from their experiences: ‘lethargic and unrealistic future’, ‘limited career exploration and weakness of mentoring program’, ‘expected aging-out and loneliness’, ‘hardship in searching for an affordable accommodation’, ‘dilemma as a recipient: having nowhere to ask for help and economic insecurity’, ‘ambivalence toward the residential care: a memory which they want to erase but irresistible part of their lives’, ‘myself who is not psychologically and financially independent.’ Based on our study, it turned out that adolescents whom are discharged from the residential care, had to stand up on their own and to enter adulthood within 1-2 years. Having understood their difficulty and the importance of early intervention, we would like to suggest for the establishment of pre and post intervention for these adolescents along with the flexible policy related to this issue.
