This paper examines the advanced Vietnamese language teaching textbooks for foreigners in terms of expressions and topics. It provides an overview of literature of evaluation of the lexis and topics supplied in foreign language teaching textbooks, and the objectives and outputs of standardized tests of Vietnamese proficiency in terms of expressions regarding two advanced levels (level 5 and 6) proposed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. The paper describes the collection of the expressions and topics in five advanced Vietnamese language teaching textbooks for foreigners and statistically analyzes the expressions and topics supplied in these textbooks. Results indicate that the expressions and topics supplied in these textbooks are randomly selected and distributed.
In conclusion, we suggest applying the results of this study by planning the choice and placement of topics and expressions in advanced Vietnamese language teaching textbooks and test questions for advanced Vietnamese language proficiency test. We also provide an appendix that introduces the list of 1000 advanced Vietnamese expressions that teachers and learners can use in their teaching and learning of the language.
