『겐지 모노가타리』가 시작되는 「기리쓰보」권 후반부에는 히카루겐지의 성인식 모습이 자세히 기술되어 있다. 남성의 성인식을 겐부쿠라고 칭하는데 히카루겐지의 성인의례는 여러 성인식 장면 중에서도 의식의 순서 및 개요가 아주 상세하게 묘사되어 있어 당시 풍습의 이해라는 점에서도 매우 중요하다. 겐지의 겐부쿠 장면은 당시의 의식을 기록한 『세이큐키』등을 바탕으로 헤이안 시대의 규범을 철저히 반영하면서도 모노가타리의 논리 및 주제에 맞게끔 작자의 상상력을 가미한 변용에 의해 겐지의 겐부쿠를 한층 성대하고 격식있는 행사로 그려내고 있다. 겐부쿠 장면에 이어 소이부시라는 형태로 좌대신의 딸인 아오이노우에와 겐지의 결혼장면도 그려지고 있다. 이 결혼은 동궁 측에서도 입궁의 요청이 있었음에도 불구하고 좌대신이 이에 응하지 않고 겐지를 선택했다는 점에서 예로부터 기리쓰보 천황과의 결탁을 통해 겐지를 매개로 좌대신의 정치적 입지를 강화하여 장래를 도모하기 위한 포석이라는, 좌대신의 정치적인 판단의 결과라고 분석한 연구가 주를 이루었다. 그러나 작품 속 어디에도 그러한 좌대신의 심정이 기술된 부분은 없다. 모노가타리에 쓰여 지지 않은 내용을 토대로 임의로 판단하는 것을 과연 모노가타리의 올바른 해석이라 할 수 있을까. 좌대신은 차기천황에 등극할 동궁 측의 요청을 거절했으며 오히려 이러한 이례적인 선택이 정치적 불리함으로 이어짐은 명명백백하다. 그러한 가능성을 감수하고라도 겐지의 이상성에 매료되어 그를 사위로 맞이한 점이야말로 바로 좌대신의 선택의 특징이라 할 수 있다. 기리쓰보 권의 겐부쿠 장면은 히카루겐지가 이 작품의 주인공으로 본격적으로 등장하는 계기가 되며 이후 다양한 인물들과의 관계 속에서 『겐지 모노가타리』는 한층 더 버라이어티하게 그려지게 된다.

The latter half of Kiritsubo-no Maki, the first volume of The Tale of Genji, describes Genpuku (the rite of passage where one becomes an adult) of Hikaru Genji. This part of the narrative particularly describes the rite in detail, providing a reasonable perspective from which one learns the custom of the time. The Genpuku scene reflects the actual cases of Genpuku during the Heian period based on Seikyuuki, and the author of the story portraits the rite in a luxuriant and solemn manner by transforming it in accordance with the logic of the story. This writing style has the effect of emphasizing the affection of Hikaru Genji’s father towards him as well as the idealized nature of Hikaru Genji, who appears in the story as a main character in the scene. What follows the Genpuku scene is the scene where Genji marries Aoi-no Ue, a daughter of the Ministry of the Left, in the form of soibushi. Although Touguu also insisted on marring her, the Ministry of the Left declined it and decided to let Genji marry her. It is inevitable to say that this is a quite unusual choice. In some previous studies, it has been assumed that the choice made by the Ministry of the Left is the result of his political consideration. Such an attitude of the Ministry, however, is not depicted in any part of the narrative, which suggests that the assumption held in these past works is not reasonable. The Ministry of the Left declined the request from Touguu, who is expected to be the next emperor, and this is likely to engender political disadvantages. It is essential to take into account such a possibility in discussing the Ministry’s judgment. Genpuku sets the scene where Hikaru Genji is introduced to the story as a main character, which enriches the story through the description of his various human relationships with a number of other characters.
