Phthalic esters used as an plasticizer represent a reproductive toxicity effects have in some instances already led to an increased level of identification marking under hazardous materials legislation. Therefore, It is necessary for plasticizers which can be used for replacement of phthalates. Acetyl trialkycitrate (ATAC) can be used to replace phthalate esters. Preparation method of ATAC by acetylation of trialkylcitrate with acetic anhydride is presented on various acid catalysts. Trialkyl citrate was also prepared from citric acid monohydrate and alcohols to use as a raw material in the acetylation for the ATAC preparation. A methanesulphonic acid was employed as a homogeneous catalyst. Solid acid materials were also introduced as heterogeneous catalysts in the reaction. Catalytic activities of the acid catalysts were evaluated in comparison with yields of ATAC.
