Tissue adhesives are very useful biomaterials for the treatment of wounds during surgical operation. For successful treatment, it is required to have both high wet-adhesive and -mechanical strengths. To achieve both properties, we developed the tissue adhesive matrices consisting of modified chitosan derivatives with catechol group via EDC chemistry. Further, we investigated the adhesion and cohesion strengths of modified chitosans by varying cross-linking via pH and oxidizing. The physico-chemical properties and adhesive strength of the chitosan based adhesive matrices were characterized. Our results demonstrate that balanced strengths are important factors to be considered for the development of tissue-adhesives.
