As the sanitation issue of diapers have attracted a lot of attention, antibacterial property becomes important factor for superabsorbent polymer (SAP). In this study, SAP was coated with antibacterial novolacs to prepare SAPs showing antibacterial property. The four different novolacs were used, which were polymerized from four different monomers such as cardanol, pentadecylphenol, cashew nut shell liquid, and nonylphenol. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to characterize the coated SAPs. Swelling property and antibacterial ability were further examined to show the feasibility on commercializing the coated SAPs.
