Increasing the yield of crops is one of the most important problems to be considered at present in Korea. Some tests on deep plowing practices have been conducted but a design for a adequate plow for deep plowing by animal power has been lacking.
Large tractors and tillers are adapted to deep plowing, but are not available for this purpose at the present time.
This study was condtcted to design and test a new type of animal powered plow to be used for deep plowing.
During 1960-1962 conventional existing plows were reviewed and a number of experimental plows were fabricated and tested to determine effectiveness of operation and draft repuirements. One such design was proved to be superior for deep plowing and named the “Jaekun” plow by The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Its major characterstics are as follows:
1. The moveable slatted shape moldboard is attached by bolts instead of being a fixed cast iron design.
2. A sharp steel share is similarly attached.
3. A clevis is used to adjust plowing depth and width.
4. A steel I beam is used in stead of a lumber beam to save lumber and provide for longer life.
5. An improved landside is attached to reduce soil friction and permit easier control.
Following results can be expected by using the “Jaekun” plow.
1. This design plow can plow deeper(2 to 3cm) than existing plows.
2. Longer lifes expected than existing plows due to the steel construction.
3. Less animal draft is needed than existing plows and handling is very easy.
4. Plowing time is reduced and better quality of plowing is obtained.
