최근까지 1901년에 일어난 제주교안에 대해서는 비교적 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 이는 매우 바람직한 현상으로 파악된다. 그러나 아직은 더 다루어야 할 부분이 남아있다. 그것은 역시 사료와 관련된 부분이다. 이들 사료 가운데에서 교회측 자료와는 달리 비교회측 자료들에 대한 관심은 상대적으로 소홀하였기 때문이다. 예를 들면 유학자로서 온건 개화파인사인 김윤식이 저술한 『속음청사』는 제주교안을 이해하는데 매우 중요한 1차 자료라고 말할 수 있다. 그는 제주교안이 일어나게 된 원인이 어디에 있는가를 파악하고 있었다. 천주교측이 일으킨 폐단이 제주도에 대한 세금징수와 밀접히 연결되고 있음을 알려주고 있다. 그리고 그는 민란을 일으킨 백성들의 움직임 또한 자세하게 서술하고 있다. 그러나 그는 천주교 신자와 프랑스 신부에 대한 백성들의 지나친 대응에는 비판적인 입장을 취하였다. 이를 통해서 그는 새로운 종교인 천주교의 수용이 조선사회에 어떠한 변화를 일으키고 있는가를 주목하였다. 또한 김윤식은 제주교안을 제주도만의 문제로 국한시켜 이해하지 않았다. 거기에는 서울에서 정치적인 이유로 말미암아 제주도에 유배된 천주교 신자들이 적극적으로 참여하고 있었으며, 교안이 전개양상에 따라서 외국세력이 조선에 개입할 여지를 만들어 줄 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 이에 그는 조선의 천주교와 깊은 관계를 맺는 프랑스뿐만 아니라, 거기에 대립하고 일본의 움직임과 함께 미국인 고문관의 활동에 집중적인 관심을 두었다. 즉 그는 제주교안이 당시 동아시아의 격동적인 외교변화에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 살피고자 하였다.

Up to date, relatively large numbers of researches on Jeju Gyoan which occurred in 1901 have been conducted. This is highly desirable phenomenon. However, there still exist matters to be dealt. It is also related with historical records. Among these historical records, materials from the non-church side are relatively neglected unlike the materials from the church side. For instance, 『Sokeumcheongsa』 written by Kim Yunsik, who is a Confucian Scholar of the moderate-enlightenment party, is extremely important primary source in understanding the Jeju Gyoan. He gave an account of the cause of the Jeju Gyoan. He showed that troubles caused by the Catholics were closely associated with tax-collection imposed on the Jeju. In addition, he described in detail, movements of the people who raised the riots. On the contrary, he took a critical stand toward the people’s immoderate reactions to the Catholic and the French priests. Through this, he focused on the change in the society of Chosun dynasty brought by the acceptance of Catholicism. Furthermore, he did not comprehended the Jeju Gyoan as a problem confined in Jeju. Since many Catholics, whom exiled from Seoul due to political reasons, were actively participating, he saw that Jeju Gyoan could give a cause for the foreign powers to intervene in the Chosun dynasty. Thereupon, he put an intensive attention to the movements of US councilor, and the Japan that were in opposing side with the France which had close connections to Catholicism in Chosun dynasty. Thus, he was trying to grasp how Jeju Gyoan would affect the turbulent foreign diplomacy situations of East Asia of the time.
