이 논문은 李重煥(1690-1755)의 명저 『擇里志』가 1751년에 완성되었다는 학계의 정론에 의문을 품고 저자가 사망한 1756년 이전 어느 시점까지 초고본의 내용을 수정하여 개정본을 만들었다는 입론을 세웠다. 개정본 저술의 가능성을 이익이 친지에게 보낸 편지에서 먼저 확인하였다. 이어서 수십 종에 이르는 다양한 이본의 교감을 통해 필사자의 개입으로 설명하기 어려운 텍스트의 변화와 그에 따르는 일관된 질서를 찾아냈고, 몇 가지 사례를 통해 텍스트에 존재하는 큰 차이를 제시하였다. 초고본과 개정본으로 분류한 이본군에서 명백한 차이를 제시하고 분석한 결과, 적지 않은 유의미한 차이를 확인하고 저자가 직접 개정했다는 가설의 근거를 충분히 제시하였다. 분석의 결과, 개정을 통해 내용이 더 풍부해지고, 논리가 정연하며, 풍수설이나 지리 현상의 자세한 설명을 줄이는 대신 인문적 요소가 더 풍부하고, 서술이 합리적이도록 바뀐 사실을 새롭게 밝혔다. 현재 150종으로 확인한 많은 이본 텍스트에서 발생한 근본적인 차이는 실제로는 초고본과 개정본의 轉寫에서 발생했음을 합리적으로 설명할 수 있다. 논문에서 주장한 가설과 입증한 내용은 『택리지』의 텍스트 구조를 이해하는 새로운 관점으로서 관련한 연구에 기여할 수 있다.

This study questions the general consensus in the academia that Taengniji by Lee Jung-hwan (1690-1755) was completed in 1751, and argues that the author made several revisions to the original edition up to the year of his passing in 1756. A letter written by Lee Ik to his close friend hints at the possibility of the existence of revised editions. Dozens of variants were analyzed, and the identified differences cannot simply be explained as the result of having different transcribers. Significant differences were presented through a few case studies. This study found significant differences across the variants, classified into original and revised, and gathered sufficient evidence that the author himself made revisions to the original edition. The analysis showed that the author’s revisions enriched the content, systematized his logic, complemented his views on feng shui and geography while keeping explanations concise, and made the narrative more rational. The fundamental differences in the 150 variants can be traced to differences in the transcription of the original and revised editions. The hypothesis and findings of this study offer a fresh perspective in understanding the structure of Taengniji, and may serve as a valuable reference in related research.
