This article is concerned with studying the characteristics of the language used in Thai news on the internet and proposing Thai news on the internet for teaching Thai language as a second language. The result of this study indicate that the language of Thai news on the internet is a register which shows many types of remarkable characteristics such as the uses of abbreviation, foreign words, colloquial terms, nicknames and newly-coined idioms. In addition, the sentence constructions are characterized by changing the quantitative noun phrases, by omitting certain sentence units and by the interchanging of word orders. To propose Thai news on the internet for teaching Thai language as the second language, the teachers should use Thai news on the internet as the instructional media. And should explain the students about the concept of register by showing the difference between standard register and news register. In order that the students can use Thai language so efficiently.
