As the concept of ‘Sustainable Development’ in recent years has become important in the development policy decision, there have been various trials to develop the indicators for measuring sustainability with various perspectives. However, it is hard to find yet the case and the research carried out at the rural village level. In this context, this study was performed as follows which are also a fundamental study to develop the sustainability indicators for rural village: the first, the definition and the objective of rural village sustainability are established base on the current issues and the directions of sustainable development at the human settlement and the village level, the second, the existing sustainability indicators classified into living environment, production environment and natural environment, and the third, the case study was performed on two rural villages of Korea and Japan.
