우리가 전통적 글쓰기를 통해 배울 점은 글쓰기 양식 자체가 아니라 자기표현의 내용 마련을 위한 자기 탐구의 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 자전문학의 다양한 하위 갈래는 고유한 자기 탐구 방식을 갖고 있는데, 이 연구에서는 탁전, 자찬묘지명, 화상자찬의 자기 탐구와 자기표현을 유용한 것으로 보았다. 각 사례에 해당하는 작품으로 이덕무의 <간서치전>, 남종현의 <자묘지>, 이제현과 강세황의 화상자찬 등을 들었다. 이를 통해 ‘자기의 객체화’, ‘죽음을 대면하는 상상’, ‘자기 초상에 대한 소회와 평가’ 등, 자기표현에 선행하거나 함께 이루어질 수 있는 자기 탐구의 방식을 현대적인 자기표현의 활법(活法)으로 제안하였다. 그 구체적인 방식은 다음과 같다. 자기를 객체화하기 위해 이름이나 별명을 붙여 객관적인 대상처럼 묘사하는 방식을 통해 자기 모습을 특성화할 수 있는 한편, 현재의 자기를 관조할 수 있는 거리를 확보할 수 있다. 또, 죽음을 대면하는 상상을 통해, 필멸적 존재로서 자기의 삶에 대한 엄정한 평가적 시선을 도입해 볼 수 있다. 그럼으로써 미래에까지 이어질 삶에 있어 중요한 자기기획을 발견하거나 구성하는 경험을 할 수 있다. 자기 초상에 대한 소회와 평가는 과거의 나와 현재의 나를 비교할 수 있는 방식으로서 과거로부터 현재에 이르기까지 이어진 개인의 역사성을 깨닫는 경험을 제공한다. 아울러 그림이나 사진 등 재현된 이미지를 동반한 자기표현은 관념 속 자기상과 재현된 이미지의 거리에 대한 성찰을 가능하게 할 것이다.

What we learn through traditional writings of self-expression is not the writing style itself, but the self-inquiry methods for the content of writings. The various subdivisions of the Jajunmunhak(自傳文學) have their own self-inquiry methods, which are considered to be useful in self-expression writings. In each case, I introduced Lee Duk-moo's < Gansuchijun(看書痴傳) >, Nam Jong-hyun's < Jamyuji(自墓誌) >, Lee Jae-hyun and Gang Seo-hwang's Hwasangjachan(書像自贊). Through these, we can find the ways of self-inquiry that can precede or coexist with self-expression, such as 'objectification of oneself', 'imagination to face death' and, 'impression and evaluation about self-portrait'. The concrete methods are as follows. In order to objectify self, it is possible to characterize the self by adding a name or nickname and portraying it as an object, while securing a distance to contemplate the present self. Also, through the imagination facing death, we can introduce a strict evaluation view of life as a mortal existence. By doing so, we will have the experience of discovering or constructing an important self-planning in life that will lead to the future. The impression and evaluation of self-portrait provides an experience of realizing the history of an individual from the past to the present. In addition, the self-expression accompanied by the represented image such as a picture or a photograph will enable to reflect on the distance between the represented one and imagined one.
