이 논문은 1950년대 후반에 신흥출판사에서 발간한 <자작시 해설집> 총서의 문화사적 의미를 밝힌 것이다. 박목월, 유치환, 장만영 등의 중진 시인이 특별히 ‘총서’의 형태로 산문집을 발간한 것은 시문학(詩文學)장(場)의 변화와 관련이 깊다. 해방 직후에 전통서정시 중심의 시단(詩壇) 구성은 1950년대 중반 이후 모더니즘 시가 급증하며 달라진다. <자작시 해설집>과 같은 기획은 유치환을 비롯해 청록파 계열의 시적 확대를 시도하는 계기였다. 또한 이 총서는 1950년대 중반 이후 한국 현대시사(現代詩史) 서술이 본격화되고, 저널리즘에서 수기, 자서전 등이 붐이 이룰 때, 이와 맞물려 회고적 역사 기술에 편승한 출판물 중 하나이다. 시인들은 자신들의 문학적 변화를 단절 또는 연속의 과정으로 재구 성하면서 현대(박목월), 세계성(조병화), 번역(장만영), 반공(한하운), 형이상학(유치환) 등을 전후 시문학의 핵심 키워드로 내세웠다. 요컨대 <자작시 해설집>은 한국시의 후속 세대를 위한 시작법이자 동시에 자신의 문학사적 위상을 새롭게 마련하기 위한 자기-서사의 텍스트였다.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meanings of cultural history in the series of The Explication of the Poem which were published by the Shinheung Publisher in the late 1950s. The publication of prose collections as a form of a series written by the leading and influential poets, such as Park Mokwol, Yoo Chihwan, and Jang Manyoung, is closely related to the change in the circle of poetic literature. Since Korea Liberation, the formation of poetical circles focusing on the traditional lyric poetry has dramatically changed after the surge of modernist poetry from the late 1950s. The project, like The Explication of the Poem, provided the opportunity to try poetic expansion of Chungnokpa poet group including Yoo Chihwan. In addition, When the narratives of the history of modern Korean poetry started in earnest after mid-1950s, and memoirs and autobiographies in journalism was booming, in accordance with the trend, these series are regarded as one of retrospective historical narratives. By re-constructing their literary transformations as the process of discontinuity and continuity, poets put up the words like ‘Modern’(Park Mokwol), ‘Cosmopolitanism’(Cho Byunghwa), ‘Translation’(Jang Manyoung), ‘Anticommunism’ (Han Hawoon), and ‘Metaphysics’(Yoo Chihwan) as key words of poetic literature after the Korean War. In short, The Explication of the Poem played a role of poetics for subsequent generations in Korean poetry as well as texts of self-narratives for their new literary status.
