Generally, Gentrification means that the place that was originally the living places of the poor is transformed into the middle and upper class’s residential and commercial districts. Gentrification initially occurred in major metropolitan areas in developed countries, but in the 2000s it has been observed in many cities around the world, including non-Western regions.
In this study, I tried to analyze what gentrification is and how it is undergoing a process of meaning change. Then, I tried to examine how and in what way the gentrification occurs in China, and how the Chinese academic community is doing research on it. In addition, I tried to examine the characteristics of the gentrification phenomena in China, which are revealed in these studies, and how they differ from the Western Gentrification.
Through this process, I tried to analyze how the concept of gentrification is established in China, and how positive or negative they are thinking about it. This will also allow us to look into what new city-related discourses can be created in China in the future.
