본 논문은 동양 신비주의를 바탕으로 작품 활동을 한 윤이상의 음악을 물리 학, 특히 20세기 들어 부각된 입자물리학의 시각을 통해 이해하고자 한 시도였다. 이를 위해 20세기 물리학자 데이비드 보음이 원자론의 변천을 바탕으로 제시한 분할적 사고와 전체적 사고의 틀을 가져왔으며, 이러한 두 가지 틀에 윤이상의 작품 「유동」에서 나타난 음악적 성격을 나누어 정리했다. 「유동」의 분할적 구조는 작곡가가 겹세로줄을 이용하여 나누고 있는 3부 구조에 따라 음향군들을 적게는 5개에서 많게는 14개로 나누어 정리하였다. 「유동」의 전체적 성격은 우선 주요음향기법에서의 12음사용이다. 물론 작곡 가는 엄격한 음렬주의를 따르지 않았다. 그는 음향군들의 생성과 소멸의 모든 순간에 12음을 모두 출현시킴으로 12음을 음향군을 창출하는 주요한 소재로 적극 활용하고 있다. 전체적 사고를 반영한 두 번째 요소는 각 음향군들이 경계면은 있으나 두드러지는 매듭이 없이 지속적으로 이어진다는 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 미세한 소리로 시작하고 미세한 소리로 사라져가는 곡의 시작과 끝에 주목하였다. 「유동」의 시작은 우리의 삶이 우리가 지각할 수 없는 그 어느 순간에 생성되어 지금이라는 시간에까지 이르게 된 것과 같이 눈에 보이는 세계는 눈에 보이지 않는 미시세계를 그 기반으로 함을 상징한다. 점차로 사라지는 듯한 「유동」의 끝부분은 음악이 계속 될 것 같은 기대감을 갖게 만든다. 이는 지금여기의 시공간에서 감상하는 「유동」과 끝을 알 수 없는 우주공간에 솔기를 두지 않으려는 작곡가의 의도로 음악은 언제 시작하여도 좋고 언제 끝나도 좋다는 동양철학을 반영한 것이다.

This paper attempt to view Yun’s music, Fluktuationen, according to the holistic framework developed by the physicist, David Bohm. Bohm points out that quantum theory imply the necessity of seeing the universe as an indivisible whole. The first element of holism in Fluktuationen is the use of 12 tones with the Hauptklang technique. Yun did not use the 12 tones as serialism; rather, he used the 12 tones throughout each step of producing Hauptklang as the necessary material. The second element of holism is the continuous flow of music, which does not allow the melodic knot or pause. The third element of holism involves both the beginning and end of Fluktuationen. It is like a traditional oriental way of thinking that can be started and stopped at any time. The beginning of the Fluktuationen may be interpreted as a symbolism of the micro-world from which our universe originated. Of course, one cannot remember the very beginning of one’s life, yet that period is nonetheless connected to the way in which one perceives one’s life as a whole. The end of Fluktuationen is also not clear as the sound gradually disappears. There is the effect of reverberation, in which there is the expectation that the music will continue.
