도깨비 도로는 실제 경사와 반대로 지각되는 현상이다. 도깨비 도로는 전 세계적으로 보고되며 한국에서도 다수가 알려져 있다. 해외에서 도깨비 도로는 관광뿐만 아니라 학문적 연구 대상이다. 그에 비해서 우리나라에서 도깨비 도로를 학문적으로 바라보는 시선은 부족하다. 본 연구에서, 제주도 사례를 포함하여 우리나라에서 도깨비 도로로 알려진 20개의 도로를 전수 조사하였고, 이 가운데 17개를 중심으로 왜 착시가 일어나는지 심리학적으로 설명을 하였다. 조사 결과, 모든 도깨비 도로는 평균 1~2° 사이의 낮은 경사를 보였고, 주요 원인으로 나무나 가로등 같은 도로 주변의 물체에 의한 맥락, 이웃한 도로끼리의 경사 대비를 지목하였다. 끝으로, 조사를 토대로 도깨비 도로를 관광 산업의 관점에서 좀 더 슬기롭게 활용할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다.

The antigravity hill is a visual illusion that people incorrectly see a uphill as downhill or vice versa. This illusion is reported all over the world including Korea, and attracts many tourists. In this study, all antigravity hills to be reported in Korea were surveyed to understand in terms of previous theories. In the results, 17 cases were found and their geographical conditions were examined. The slope contrast between neighboring roads, the visual disconnection of the end of a road, and contextual height from nearby objects such as trees and houses were pointed out as the main causes of antigravity hills. Largely, the slopes were as low as about 1~2°, which suggests that the illusion may occur where the slant is not evidently detected by the eye-level based on the proprioceptive senses. Lastly, I discussed how to explain the phenomenon better for tourist and the ways to take care of the roads to show more powerful illusion.
