A study on festival participants' perception of authenticity in cultural heritage festivals

Tourists' matured tourism experience makes them concentrate on their special interest and authentic experience. With increasing attention for authentic experience, cultural heritage festivals were considered as a form of alternative tourism that creates positive impacts. Therefore, This study tried to explore the characteristics of the segment market of festival visitors, employing basic variables of motivations. This research shows that the role of authenticity in the commodified cultural heritage festival and critically evaluates a commodified heritage festival in Korea, the Anseong Baudeogi Festival. The result showed that the characteristics of visitors who perceived objective authenticity at the Baudeogi Festival had generally more knowledge and experience about the festival. Objective authenticity was not based on the genuineness of the performance, but rather, visitors' personal feelings and judgments based on their experiences.
