본 연구는 해방기 이선희 소설 <창>에 나타난 토지개혁 양상과 서사 전략에 대해고찰하고 이를 통해 작가의 이데올로기 선택과 지향을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. <창>은 토지개혁 과정에서 벌어지는 인물들의 갈등과 내면 심리의 추이를 세밀하게 그리고 있다. 연재 초기에는 팽팽하게 대립되는 인물 설정으로 토지개혁 문제와 그 이면에 내재된 이데올로기 선택 문제를 중립적인 시각에서 접근하고자 하였다. 소설 중 반부터는 회상의 방식을 사용한 내면 심리 묘사를 통해 김사백의 소망을 노골적으로 피력함으로써 토지개혁의 국면에서 작가가 선 자리를 분명하게 드러냈다. 연재가 끝날 무렵에는 주인공 김교사의 자살로 급하게 소설을 마무리 지었다. 작가는 무상몰수 무상분배가 성실한 소지주들의 몰락과 희생이 전제되었다는 점을 포착하고 그들의 희생으로 인하여 미래가 밝다는 희망적 메시지를 전달하며 이데올로기의 타협점을 찾은 것으로 판단된다.

In this study, I intend to examine the aspects and strategies of the land reform described in Lee Sun-hee's novel 'Chang', and investigate how the writer's ideology was chosen and oriented. 'Chang' depicts in detail the conflict of the characters and the changes of their inner psychology over the process of the land reform. In the early pieces of the series, the writer takes a neutral approach to the interpersonal problems involving the land reform and the selection of ideology behind them during the tense conflict of the characters. As it goes past the middle of the novel, the writer uses retrospection to explicate Kim Sa-baek's inner psychology, exposing Kim's desire openly. This also indicates the writer's clear stance on the land reform. At the end of the series, the writer finishes the novel with the main character ending up with a sudden suicide. Kim's sudden death is the outcome of the writer's attempt to finish the work arbitrarily, without showing his firm conviction at the crossroads of ideological selection. This is related to the writer's defection to North Korea. It seems that Lee Sun-hee well captures that the ideology of non-compensatory forfeiture and free distribution of land premises is subject to the downfall and sacrifice of sincere landlords and finds a compromising point with ideology, conveying a hopeful message that their sacrifice will brighten the future.
