본 연구는 정신분석의 이론적 고찰을 통해 현대 사회의 정치, 문화적 영역에서 비판이론으로서의 정신분석의 가능성을 모색하는 데 있다. 그동안 정신분석은 개인의 심리학이라는 정신의학으로 제한되어왔으며, 비과학성은 물론 범성욕주의나 남근중심주의라는 오명 속에서 사회현상을 비판적으로 인식하는 이론으로서의 자격을 박탈당해왔다. 그러나 정신분석은 확실성과 이를 위한 객관적이고 표준적인 절차를 강조하는 전통적인 과학이 오히려 정신분석이 다루는 무의식의 투케를 배제함으로써 일관성을 갖을 수 있게 된다고 비판한다. 아울러 프로이트와 라캉의 정신분석은 단순히 개인의 심리에 머무르는 것이 아니라 무의식과 욕망을 통해 인간의 심리와 사회를 동시적으로 고려하고 있다. 인간의 욕망은 사회 상징적 질서와 실재와의 관계 속에서 다양한 방식으로 표출되기 때문에 문화연구 진영에서 비판하는 성정체성의 고정이나 여성에 대한 억압은 일어나지 않는다. 나아가 지젝의 논의를 통해 정신분석을 경유한 알튀세르의 이데올로기론이 갖는 문화연구의 비판을 재전유함으로써, 정신분석이 무의식적 욕망을 통해 이데올로기와 주체구성의 문제 및 사회변화를 이해하고 추동할 수 있다고 보았다. 이를 통해 정신분석은 사회 비판적 이론으로서 문화연구을 보완하는 하나의 이론으로 자리매김 할 수 있다.
This thesis aimed to propose psychoanalysis as a valid theoretical framework for critical studies as well as a tool of social recognition for alternative practice. Even in Cultural Studies, the psychoanalytic studies have been undervalued as a subordinate of psychiatry, that is either for solving individual mental problems, or applicable for the studies of literature or fine art in limited ways. Such misconceptions have yielded preconceived opinions as if psychoanalysis could only be revisionist mis-recognition that disregards people’s social practice and change. This study attempts to reinstate psychoanalysis as radical discourse. Theories of psychoanalysis are neither non-scientific nor non-political; the thought should be understood as an effective theorization that deals with the issue of the subjectivity and its social relation in deeper levels.
This thesis criticized cultural studies’ limited understanding of psychoanalysis, including by Stuart Hall. In particular, although psychoanalysis was introduced as an anecdote to Althusserian notion of ideologies, cultural studies misidentified the principles; for instance, the Oedipus complex was understood as a process of amalgamation of one’s sexual identity.
Slavoj Zizek’s psychoanalytic appropriation on commodity fetishism explains that ideologic fantasy provides a notion of consistency in the real, which naturalizes the suppression in capitalist society. This understanding indicates that the notion of interpellation, by Louis Althusser, can be achievable if object a, the cause of desire located in ideologies, can be recognized as a real requisite.
With this study, psychoanalysis can be qualified as a valid theory, and one that can provide a proper foundation for critical social analysis and practice in reality. Psychoanalysis can also contribute to the theoretical expansion of cultural studies through concrete perspectives to the issues of socio-politics.
