『삼국유사(三國遺事)』 권2 「무왕(武王)」條에 실린 〈서동요〉와 배경설화(서동설화)는 다양한 양식으로 전용되어왔다. 그러나 노래와 이야기가 결합된 설화가 전용이 될 때 설화의 이야기는 다양하게 전용이 일어나는 반면, 노래의 의미와 역할을 함께 살려 전용이 된 사례는 드물었다. SBS에서 방영했던 55부작 드라마 《서동요》는 노래와 이야기의 측면을 모두 고려하여 훌륭하게 전용한 사례라고 판단된다. 설화 속에서 〈서동요〉가 선화공주를 꾀어내는 결정적인 역할을 하는 것과 마찬가지로, 드라마 속에서 〈서동요〉는 총 네 번에 걸쳐 등장하며 남녀 주인공의 애정 서사와 서동의 왕위 습득 서사를 이끌어나가는 장치로 사용된다. 드라마 전개에 따라 노래가 변형되면서 각각 만남의 노래-재회의 노래-정치적 참요-사랑의 노래 순으로 의미와 기능이 확대되고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 드라마 《서동요》는 노래와 이야기의 두 가지 측면을 계승하여 줄거리뿐만 아니라 서술에서도 원전설화를 바람직하게 전용한 사례이다. 본고의 분석은 노래와 결합된 설화를 어떻게 전용할 수 있는가에 대한 하나의 모범답안이 될 것이다.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze a historical drama named 《Seodongyo》, which is a great example of storytelling transformation. The original contents of this drama are a folk tale (Seodong-tale) and a native song (Seodongyo), included in 『Samgukyusa』 book two, chapter of 「Muwang (武王)」. Even though there are various contents based on folk tale combined with song, most of them only use the story of it. Because the story is much easier to handle. In other words, it is difficult to use both song and story. However, the drama shows how to transform not only the story, but also the song. The song < Seodongyo > appears four times through slight variations. As the feature modifies, the meaning of the song also extends: Song of Meeting, Song of Reunion, Political Participation, Song of Love. The role of the song is to lead the characters’ love narration and the story how to hero acquires the throne. Ultimately, this paper serves an example of well-organized transformation of the folk tale combined with the song by analyzing the components of a television drama.
