2017년 가을 스페인의 한 자치지역인 카탈루냐의 독립 움직임이 중요한 뉴스였는데, 그 배경에는 스페인의 역사적인 현실이 자리 잡고 있다. 이 나라는 역사적으로 다양한 민족, 언어, 문화를 소유했으며, 이는 각 지역의 독립 또는 분리주의 운동의 동인이 되어왔다. 이러한 면에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 본 연구는 카탈루냐 독립 움직임의 역사적 배경과 전개 과정을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 카탈루냐의 형성에서 프랑코 독재시기까지의 역사적 상황 그리고 스페인의 민주화이후 지방자치가 제도화되는 과정을 고찰하였다. 이어서 자치권의 확대를 넘어서 분리 독립 움직임으로 이어지는 과정을 최근의 상황과 관련하여 살펴보았다.

In the fall of 2017, the pro-independence movement of Catalonia, a Spanish autonomous region, became an important issue. This movement has its roots in the historical reality of Spain as a nation which comprises diverse languages, cultures and nationalist sentiments, which have constituted the leading forces towards independence and secessionism in some regions. From this perspective, this study seeks to explore the historical background and developmental process of the Catalonia independence movement. To this end, I will first examine the historical situation from the formation of Catalonia to Franco’s dictatorship, followed by the institutionalization process of regional autonomies after the Spanish transition to democracy. Finally, a careful analysis of the current situation in Catalonia will be undertaken in order to try to more fully comprehend this pro-independence movement beyond the expansion of Catalonia’s autonomy.
