본 연구의 목적은 한반도 DMZ의 주요 무력 충돌 사례와 배경, 그리고 그 추이를 검토하는데 있으며, 이를 통해 DMZ의 갈등 정도와 수준 및 실태를 추적하고 있다. 1953년 7월 28일부터 2009년 12월 31일까지 유엔군사령부가 집계하고 있는 북한군에 의한 정전협정 주요 위반사건은 총 219건이며, 이중 육상 도발은 115건이다. 또한 국방부가 집계한 1953년 7월 28일부터 2016년 11월 31일까지 기간 동안 북한의 도발사례(침투도발, 국지도발) 건수는 모두 3,094건이다. 이중 DMZ와 직접적으로 관련되는 직접침투(1,759건) 및 접적지역 도발(507건)은 2,266건으로 73%를 차지한다. 본 연구에서 연구대상으로 삼고 있는 군사충돌은 군사분계선을 중심으로 한 북한의 침투 및 도발에 따른 DMZ 및 민통선 지역에서의 남북한 교전과 그에 따른 사상자 발생한 사례이다. DMZ 군사충돌은 1960년대 및 1970년대 초반에 집중되었으며, 이후 급격히 줄어든다. 이는 1960년대 중소 갈등의 첨예화, 한국의 베트남전 참전과 베트남 공산화등 외인적 요인이 작용하였다. 그리고 대내적으로는 4대군사노선의 정립과 김일성 유일지배체제의 정립 과정과 숙청 등 김일성의 리더십 수립과 관련된다.

This study aims to understand the current state, degree and level of conflicts in Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) by investigating cases, backgrounds and development of military conflicts in the Korean DMZ. According to the United Nations Command, a total of 219 cases of violating the cease-fire agreement by the North Korean military were reported from July 28, 1953 to December 31, 2009. Among them, 115 cases were provocations on land. The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea estimated that North Korea conducted 3,094 provocations(infiltration and local provocations) in total from July 28, 1953 to November 31, 2016. Among them, direct infiltration(1,759) and contact area provocations(507) which are directly related to the DMZ make 2,266 cases accounting for 73% of all provocations. Military conflicts in this study are the case of inter-Korean engagement and casualties in the DMZ and civilian access control line in the wake of infiltration and provocations along the Military Demarcation Line. Most of the military conflicts in the DMZ had been in the 1960s and the early 1970s. Since then, the number of provocations dramatically fell. This trend was affected by external factors such as rising tensions between China and the Soviet Union, Korean troop’s participation in the Vietnam War, and communization of Vietnam in the 1960s. Internally, it is associated with Kim Il Sung’s establishment of leadership which was promoted by Four Military Lines, the one and only leadership and a series of purges.
