백운동원림은 남도지방의 고유한 특성을 갖춘 별서정원이다. 노장적이며 자연적인 본분에 따라 처사의 삶을 산 입산조 이담로와 그의 손자 이언길은 백운동 별서를 처음 경영하고 일군 시조라고 할 수 있으며, 오늘의 모습을 갖춘 것은 18세기 중엽 이덕휘에서 19세기 중엽 이시헌에 이르기 까지 완성되었다고 추정된다. 이 공간은 원래 백운암(白雲庵)이라는 암자 터로 추정되는 곳에 은거를 위한 별서(別墅)로 조성하였으며 나중에는 이언길의 아들 이의권 가족이 옮겨옴으로써 별서이면서 영농과 주거의 성격을 함께한 복합적 공간이 되었다. 백운동 원림은 월출산을 배경으로 하고 계곡 주변의 경승요소를 정원 안과 밖으로 끌어들이는 뛰어난 경관미와 차경 안목이 돋보이는 입지적 특성을 지닌다. 이와 아울러 인간의 내면에 자리한 복잡한 정신세계의 심리를 정원의 구성요소로 표현하고, 정원 조영을 통해 이를 승화시키고자 한 작정자의 조영관이 투영된 원림이다. 좁은 진입부의 계곡, 멀리 올려다 보이는 산 정상부의 원경, 그 안에 안정적으로 자리한 대지와 그 주변의 경승으로 이루어진 경관미 등 다양한 입지적 특성을 갖는다. 또한 백운동원림은 다산과 제자들의 학문적 만남, 차를 통한 나눔의 공간이었다. 특히 이시헌과 다산 사이에 서신을 통해 개인사에 대한 내용을 비롯하여 차를 보내줄 것과 차 제조법을 상세히 알려주고 있는 것, 공부에 대한 당부 등을 읽을 수 있어 귀한 자료가 되고 있다. 백운동 원림의 조경식물은 매화, 난, 국화, 대나무 등의 사군자와 연(蓮), 소나무(松), 동백, 모란, 영산홍, 단풍(楓), 생달나무, 유자나무 등이 나타난다. 이는 여느정원에서와 비슷하지만 수종은 많은 편이 아니다. 특히 백운동은 우리나라에서 몇안 되는 유상곡수(流觴曲水)를 조영하고 있는 곳이다. 중국에서 곡수연은 왕희지의 난정(蘭亭)과 송나라 숭복궁의 범상정(泛觴亭)의 유구가 있고, 한국에서는 포석정, 일본에서는 평성궁 동원 발굴 석조수로(石組水路)와 평안시대 야리미즈(遣水) 곡수연의 예가 있으나 우리나라에서는 아주 드문 예이다.

Baegundong Garden is a place Lee Dam-ro and his grandson, Lee Eon-gil recreated a scenic site as a treat away from their house located in Geumdang-ri below the mountain, Wolchulsan. Lots of scholars visited the garden and expressed the beautiful scenery and landscape in their poetry and prose, and paintings handed down today. The garden is one of the best private garden, allowing us feel the taste of Chosun scholars. The place called Byeolseo as a retreat was built up at the site estimated as a hermitage, Baegunam. And then, Lee Eui-gwon(1704-1759), son of Lee Eon-gil moved into the place with his family, and the place became the multiple space for living and farming as well as a treat. In addition, there were ancestors’ graves around the residential space, which means that the space was for both the alive and the dead. Especially, the correspondence between Lee Shi Hun and Jeong Yak-yong shows some personal things such as asking for some tea, informing how to make tea, and encouraging to study, which implies that Baegundong Garden was the place for social gatherings with tea between Dasan and his students and friends. Baegundong Garden has various landscape plants such as Maehwa (plum blossom), Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Bamboos called Sagunja, Lotus, Pine trees, Camellia, Paeonia, Yeonsanhong(Korean azaleas), Maple trees, Japanese cinnamon, Fragrant Citrus, and so on. They are common in other gardens and not so many species of trees. But, Baegundong Garden has its unique features with its facility called Yusanggoksu which is a curved stream to float wine glasses at a banquet only a few remain in Korea.
