본 연구의 목적은 특정 산업 분야에서만 쓰이고 있는 경량금속인 마그네슘합금 판재가 다양한 디자인, 공예 분야에 널리 활용될 수 있도록 심미적 가치가 높은 표면장식 방법을 개발하기 위한 것이다. 마그네슘 판재의 표면에 미세한 요철을 새기고 그 위에 채색 옻칠을 얇게 도포함으로써 금속의 섬세한 질감과 자연스러운 옻칠의 색감이 어우러진 장식 효과를 표현하고자 하였다. 먼저 옻칠과의 접착성을 높일 수 있도록 미세한 요철을 만들 수 있는 마그네슘합금의 표면처리 방법을 찾았고, 판재의 표면에 정교한 패턴의 재질감을 형성시켜 장식효과를 높이는 방법을 연구하였다. 모티브가 된 것은 포목상감기물에서 볼 수 있는 '米’자 형태의 포목패턴이었으며, 이를 벡터이미지로 제작하고 감광부식을 통해 마그네슘 판재에 생성시켰다. 다음은 감광부식으로 만들어진 마그네슘 판재의 표면형상이 투영될 수 있도록 옻칠을 도포하는 방법을 연구하였다. 요철의 형상과 금속의 재질감이 드러나면서 옻칠의 고유한 색감이 돋보일 수 있게 하였고, 두 가지 색을 순차적으로 도포하면서 색의 중첩, 병치에 의한 혼색효과를 표현할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 방법은 장식효과가 높을 뿐 아니라 마그네슘의 취약한 부식 특성을 보완할 수 있으므로 마그네슘합금 판재의 활용범위를 다양한 디자인 제품과 공예작품으로 확장하는 데 기여할 수 있다.

The Purpose of research is development of aesthetically valuable surface ornamentation to make magnesium alloy sheet widely available in the field of design and craft. Through developing technique that makes fine embossed surface of magnesium sheet and thin coats of color ottchil on that, beautiful harmony of delicate metal texture and natural color of ottchil can be presented. firstly, surface treatment technique to make high adhesive strength with ottchil and effective method to make elaborate surface pattern was researched. The motif is cross-hatch pattern with '米’ shape. It was changed to a vector image and projected through light to magnesium alloy sheet which was corroded in dilute acid. Than, means of apply thin coats of color ottchil was researched. The process to reveal the metal texture through characteristic color of ottchil, and the color mixing effect through overlapping and juxtaposition of two different color were studied. This surface ornamentation is not only decorative but also effective to complement weak corrosion properties, so it can contribute to extend the range of usage of magnesium alloy sheets to various design and craft productions.
