이 연구는 초등학교 사회과 환경교육 내용의 지도 실태를 조사하여 사회과 환경교육에 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다. 조사를 위해 서울 강서구와 양천구 초등학교에서 근무하고 있는 사회과를 지도하는 3, 4, 5, 6학년 담임교사를 학년 별로 2명씩 개별 인터뷰하였다. 대부분 교사들의 경우에는 사회과 환경교육 관련 내용을 지도할 때 조사학습을 가장 많이 사용하고 있었다. 그러나 조사학습은 다른 학습방법과 함께 사용되는 경우가 많았다. 즉, 조사한 내용을 토의하거나 또는 조사한 내용을 교사가 강의하는 등 다양한 학습방법이 사용되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 지도상의 난점을 묻는 질문에는 교과서 내용의 실제성과 지도한 후의 실천이 이루어지지 않는다. 5~6학년의 경우에는 지식이나 조사 한계를 지적하고 있다. 학습한 후 효과를 묻는 질문에 대부분은 효과가 없거나 또는 학습 당시에는 효과가 있었으나 그 효과가 지속적이지 못한 점을 지적하고 있다. 효과가 지속적으로 이루어 졌다고 응답한 경우도 있었으나 그것도 일부분에 그쳤다. 사회과 환경교육의 개선점을 묻는 질문에 내용의 과다와 지식위주의 접근을 많은 교사가 들고 있다. 이는 교과서가 환경문제를 나열식으로 다루고 있다는 것으로 개선할 점이라 생각된다. 또한 최근 초등학교에서 이루어지는 성취도 평가에서는 시험 출제의 기준으로 교과서가 선정되고 있는 현실에서 교사가 내용을 선별하거나, 새로운 내용이나 접근 방법을 실천하기에는 한계가 있다는 점을 나타내고 있다.

This study is to examine the environmental education of social studies in elementary schools to suggest ways for effective environmental education. Two teachers of each grade in the third to sixth working in Kangseogu and Yanchungu, have been interviewed for the research. Through this interview what's been gained is as follows. One of the teaching methods most teachers interviewed use the most is the research. However, the method has been tried with other skills together. For example, it was proved that the ways are like discussion of what students researched or summarize of the information students gained. The difficulty most teachers find very hard was how to process the environmental subject. Some teachers pointed out the trouble of discussion procedure and the limit of knowledge and research. For the question about the effect of the environmental education, it turned out that there have been little effect, if any, it was not lasting. The parts which should be corrected was too much content of the environment education and the knowledge-centered teaching approach. I think that these problems are closely related to the way environmental issues are presented separately and the current accomplishment test at elementary schools. Therefore, I definitely point out that there is limits on the practicality of new content or teaching approaches for teachers to try with textbooks depended heavily on as standards of test.
