이 글은 동아시아 현대 이행의 장기사적인 쟁점을 검토하는 작업이다. 특히 캘리포니아 학파의 대분기 연구와 동아시아 발전 경로 연구에 담긴 쟁점들을 중심으로 검토한다. 역사적 시간성의 모델, 동아시아 경로, 현대(성)의 모델이 그것이다. 동아시아 발전 경로 연구와 대분기 연구는 서양 중심주의 비판을 넘어서 현대(성)의 모델에 대한 서양의 독점을 지양하는 다선적·다중적 현대(성) 모델을 추구하는 것으로 보인다. 이 글은 각각의 쟁점을 비판적으로 검토하면서 동아시아 현대 이행과 발전 궤적에 대한 장기사적 연구에 필요한 몇 가지 이론적 함의를 이끌어 낸다.

This article analyses some issues on the Modern making of East Asia, especially paying attentions to the studies on the Great Divergence and East Asian Development Path. The issues are historical temporality, East Asian path and models of modernity which have been suggested to explain the Modern making of East Asia. These studies have tried to deconstruct Eurocentrism in Global History and pursued a ‘multiple modernities as multi-linear modernities’ model to explain the modern trajectories of East Asia.These issues and some implications are discussed for the study of the modern making of East Asia in the long-run perspective.
