국어과 교육과정은 實用性, 價値觀, 知識의 構造, 技能, 思考, 文化 등으로 인식의 폭을 확장해 왔는데, 이들은 모두 국어교육의 본질을 형성하는 축들이다. 실용성은 이들 여러 요소들과 共存하며, 특히 삶과 학습의 善循環 關係를 조장한다는 점에서 중요하다. 국어교육에서 실용성은 內容, 方法, 評價 층위 모두에 작용하며, 다른 한편으로 타 요소와의 비교를 통해서 드러나는 外的 實用性과 동일 요소의 질적 특성에서 드러나는 內的 實用性을 지닌다. 이런 점에서 실용성은 多面性을 지닌다. 국어교육에서 실용성을 높이기 위해서는 내용의 具體性과 立體性, 교수-학습 방법의 有目的性과 循環性을 추구해야 한다. 이처럼 실용성을 추구하는 국어교육은 학습자들의 學習 動機를 북돋우고 社會의 變化에 민감하게 대응할 수 있게 하는 장점이 있다.

The understanding on practical use, ideology, knowledge, skill, thinking, culture is broadened historically in korean language curriculum. These categories are axes forming essence of korean language education. Practical use coexistence with other categories and it is important because it invigorates the good-relation between life and learning. Practical use operate in dimensions of contents, methods, assessment. In other side, there are outer-value and inner-value in practical use, the former existence in contrasting practical quality between different items and the latter existence in contrasting practical quality between the same items. For enlarging practical use in korean language education, we have to pursuit concreteness and relatedness of contents, and practical aims and circularity of methods. Enlarging practical use in korean language education have merits in motivating to learner and reacting social changes.
