이 글은 現前 작품을 중심으로 朝鮮時代 自挽詩의 類型的 특성을 검토한 것이다. 첫 번째 類型은 실제 죽음을 예감하고 쓴 시이다. 이 경우 自挽詩는 遺言的 성격을 띠게 되며, 臨終詩와도 유사한 특성을 보이게 된다. 두 번째 유형은 죽음에 대한 超越的 태도를 보여주는 시이다. 시인에 따라 超越的 태도가 현실문제에 대한 反語가 되기도 하며, 自我形象이 象徵的으로 제시되기도 한다. 세 번째 유형은 假裝된 죽음의 의식을 통해 自我表現과 虛構性의 측면이 極大化된 시이다. 죽음을 演技하고 있다는 점에서 기타 自傳的 글쓰기 양식과 변별되는 특성을 보여준다. 세 가지 유형 중 ‘假裝된 죽음’ 유형이 상대적으로 드문 것은 조선시대 시인들이 ‘나의 죽음’을 演技하고 形象化하는 데 소극적이었음을 보여준다. 조선시대의 自挽詩는 ‘나의 죽음’을 다뤘다는 측면에서 主題史的 의의를 가지며, 기타 自傳的 글쓰기 양식들과는 다른 史的 전개양상을 보여준다.

In Korean literary tradition, there is a kind of elegy which mourns the death of the poet himself, generally known as self-elegy poetry(自挽詩). Since the works of this kind are not fully known, I examine the typical characteristics of self-elegy poetry. Self-elegy poetry is one of the most representative style of auto-biographical writing along with autobiography, self-eulogy, self-epitaph, and writing on self-portrait. Since it is self- expression of what should be written by others, it is very unique. And self-elegy is much more unique, as it deals with the taboo of death. Existing self-elegy works are categorized into three types. First one is the poetry with a premonition of death. This type of works have resemblance to a will. Second type expresses a transcendent attitude toward the death. Third type is a poetry that fully shows self- expression and unreality through a fake ritual of death. And the third type of poetry is relatively less found. Because the poets in the Chosun dynasty were not willing to represent and assume the theme of “death of his own”. This fact can be interpreted that they cherished Confucian thinking which focuses on life while neglecting death. Self-elegy poetry in Chosun dynasty is meaningful from the perspective of literary theme, but fails to achieve typological characteristics.
