본고는 그동안 전신자 혹은 극문학자 등으로 한정되어 논의되었던 玄哲에 대해 小說作法論의 측면에서 玄哲이 지향했던 近代小說의 모습을 고찰하고자 했다. 첫째, ‘近代小說의 人物’과 관련된 것이다. 玄哲은 일상에서 볼 수 있는 인물을 형상화하는 것이 近代小說이 갖추어야 할 요 건이라고 논의하면서도 단순히 인물의 리얼리티만을 강조하지 않았다. 이를 위해 玄哲은 인물의 내면을 형상화하는 성격묘사의 방법과 개인의 경험에 기초한 구체적 감정의 형상화를 강조했다. 둘째, ‘近代小說이 재현해야 할 세계’와 관련된 것이다. 玄哲은 近代小說의 요건으로 리얼리티를 강조했지만, ‘外界’를 직접적으로 소설에 옮기는 것은 무의미하다고 논의했다. 소설에 표현되는 세계는 ‘실제의 세계가 아니라 재현된 세계’라는것을 인식했던 玄哲은 여러 ‘史實’들 가운데 보편성을 띨 수 있는 ‘眞理’로서의 세계를 문학적 ‘事實’로 형상화해야 한다고 주장했다. 玄哲의 小說論은 近代小說의 형식, 요소, 작법 등을 최초로 논의했다는 점에서 그리고 이를 당시 사회에 보편화시켰다는 점에서 문학사적 의의를 가진다.

This study aims to investigate the novel writing and novel discussions of Hyun Chul. He has been studied only as a dramatist or transmetteur who introduced foreign literary trends and theories. But his influence on the novel was great. This study tracked the forms of modern novels that he thought highly. First, Hyun Chul argued that modern novels must form individuality. He said that the novels need to describe characters in everyday life. However he did not emphasize only the reality of the character. He thought that individuality is more important. Therefore he proposed to describe the inside of the characters and to narrate specific emotions based on individual experience. Second, Hyun Chul argued that the novel world is not a real world but a reproduced world. He proposed that the novel world is composed by truth, that is, selected historical facts. Hyun Chul’s novel discussions are not a genre theory. His discussions are about novel forms, novel writing. His literary discussions are based on Japanese literary discussions. Nevertheless, his novel discussions were the first discussion of novel forms and novel writing in Korea.
