본고의 목적은 中世 國語의 ‘ㅕ’가 지니고 있는 音韻論的 屬性을 탐구하고 音價를 추정하는 것이다. 첫째, 形態素 內部에서는 j-系 上向二重母音 중에서 ‘ㅕ’가 압도적으로 많은 수를 차지한다. 다만 齒槽 摩擦音과 齒槽 破擦音 뒤에서는 ‘ㅕ’ 외의 二重母音들도 적지 않게 실현되고 있다. 둘째, ‘ㅕ’는 形態素 內部에서 母音調和의 例外를 많이 보인다. 이들의 ‘ㅕ’는 ‘* ··’로 再構되고 舌縮 母音에서 舌小縮 母音으로의 變化(*··>ㅕ)로 설명되고는 하였다. 그러나 ‘* ··>ㅕ’라는 變化와 母音 體系가 지니고 있는 關聯性, 그리고 j-系 上向二重母音의 대부분이 ‘ㅕ’라는 偏重性과의 관련이 명쾌하게 설명되어야 할 것이다. 셋째, 中世 國語의 ‘ㅕ’의 核母音은 여느 ‘ㅓ’와는 달리 다소 前舌에 가깝게 實現되었으리라 추정된다. 前舌 母音 뒤에서 [j]의 實現이 두드러지지 않는다는 점을 토대로 할 때, ‘ㅕ～ㅖ’의 共存 現象은 당시 ‘ㅕ’의 ‘ㅓ’가 中世 以前의 [e]가 先行 滑音으로 인하여 中舌化가 덜 進行되었음을 보여 준다고 할 수 있다.

The aim of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the phonological property and the phonetic realization of Middle Korean /j□/. The paper finds that the overwhelming majority of sequences of glide [j] and vowel inside the native Korean morphemes are /j□/'s with the exception of sequences whose onsets are alveolar fricatives of affricates, and also that there exist many exceptions to vowel harmony in the case of morphemes including /j□/. These harmony-exceptional /j□/'s have been often reconstructed as /*jΛ/ with the change of the tongue root retracted vowel to the less retracted vowel(*jΛ > j□) but this explanation includes serious problems such as distributional difference between /j□/ and the other sequences including /*jΛ/. Also this paper assumes that /j□/'s were realized as [je] phonetically on the ground of coexistence of /j□~j□j/ and this pronunciation of /□/ was closely related with frontness of preceding glide [j].
