George Orwell was a writer who expressed Tory anarchism and democratic socialism, and Alex Comfort was a writer and a scientist who led a movement of New Anarchism. When World War II broke out, the two men quarreled over a war against Germany. However, these two men regarded each other as friends, even though they had engaged in a sharp argument. The affinity of these two intellectuals can be confirmed in the fact that the New Left movement group, which inherited George Orwell's legacy, and the New Anarchism group, which absorbed the idea of Alex Comfort, would meet each other in the 1960s. The ideas of two men that criticized but resembled each other, demonstrated a subtle difference between the unique idea of reform that stood on the border between anarchism and socialism and the new trend of anarchism. The paper compares the thoughts of the two and tries to find out what common ground they had in their views of modern society and how different their opinions were on that common base. Their common features were anti-fascism, anti-centralization, anti-elitism, anti-collectivism, criticism of the left, faith in the human being, and belief in human solidarity. Their differences included the issue of war participation, views on patriotism, attitudes toward socialism, views on the nature and method of revolution, views on science, opinion on the relationship between reform and institution, and viewpoints of sex. The ideas of Orwell and Comfort were different in specific areas, but the criticism and warning they raised about contemporary society would have a common dimension and have a great significance to the reality.
