In 1950s, film industry was faced with the big threat from TV’s spread of supply. After that, film studios have survived through changes and reforms of production and distribution system. In the digital era of today, the theatrical movies encounter with another crisis, due to the digital production system, the extension and diversity of distribution platforms, and the popularity of cable TV movies and so on. And at this point, to analyse the storytelling elements of La La Land is considered critical since it can give a new paradigm for viability, providing the specific film languages from the preservation and innovation of old musical films’ style and the harmony with other arts forms. La La Land has a routine story about ‘love’ and ‘farewell’ between a woman who wants to be an actor, and a man who dreams as jazz musician, but it shows the various and creative storytelling methods. It takes the cinemascope frame(2.55:1) that used to be one of surviving strategies for 1950s’ motion pictures, the ‘long take’ fitting into the moment of story, the viewpoint shifted from Mia to Sebastian which is different from classic Hollywood movies, the theatrical elements like spotlight and colorful set, and the old musical films and pure jazz calling forth nostalgia. And these storytelling images and sounds function to global empathy with the story of ‘dreams’ and ‘love’. Chazelle tried to call back certain things from the past, then change and update them. Therefore, the success of La La Land results from the harmony of the past and the present, and it also brings the hope to the theatrical movies in storytelling ways. Especially, Korean film industry should learn the diversify and challenge forward new stories with dynamic storytelling is fundamental to survive and develop in the changeable ecosystem of the digital age.
