덴마크(Denmark)에서는 그들 특유의 디자인 스타일로서 “데니시 모던(Danish Modern)”을 발전시켜왔는데 이는 덴마크 자연을 원천으로 하는 유기적 형태, 자연적인 재료의 사용, 그리고 수공예의 전통을 잘 적용한 것이었으며 덴마크의 특질, 지역적 환경과 조화된 간결하고 편안한 디자인 스타일로 인식되어 왔다. 덴마크 디자이너인 포올 헨닝센(Paul Henningsen)은 덴마크의 조명디자인이 세계적인 평판을 얻는데 큰 공헌을 한 디자이너로 알려져 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 데니시 모던의 관점에서 포올 헨닝센의 디자인 특성을 연구하는데 있다. 데니시 모던의 배경에 대한 선행연구를 통해 데니시 모던의 표현특성은 단순성, 기능성, 지역성, 유희성으로 도출되었다. 본 논문에서는 이 네 가지의 데니시 모던의 표현특성을 바탕으로 포올 헨닝센의 15개의 조명디자인 작품을 분석하여 그 디자인 특성을 도출하고자 하였다. 1장에서는 연구의 배경과 목적, 그리고 방법이 제시되었고, 2장에서는 데니시 모던의 표현특성과 역사적 배경이 고찰되었다. 3장에서는 포올 헨닝센의 15개의 주요 조명디자인 작품을 사례 연구하였고, 데니시 모던의 네 가지 표현특성을 바탕으로 그의 조명디자인의 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과로, 포올 헨닝센의 조명디자인에서 나타나는 데니시 모던의 표현특성은 다음과 같다. 1)단순성-다양한 조명으로 변형, 발전 가능한 원형적 형태 2)기능성-어느 공간에나 적용 가능한 인간공학적 디자인 3)지역성-전통 공예와 접목된 기술과 재료 활용 4)유희성-합리적인 유기체적 감성. 그리고 4장에서는 종합적인 결론을 도출하였다. 이 연구를 통하여 데니시 모던이 헨닝센의 작품의 디자인 과정에서도 독특한 역할을 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 데니시 모던은 지금도 현대사회에 적용될 수 있는 유효한 디자인 철학이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

Danish people has created their characteristics "Danish Modern" as an adaption to their environment which is an organic form based on their nature, affection of natural material, and handicraft tradition. Danish Modern has been recognized as simple and comfortable design movement that has been matched with its unique regional environment. Danish designer, Paul Henningsen rendered great contribution to the worldwide reputation of the Danish lighting lamp design. This study aims to investigate his design characteristics in the viewpoint of Danish Modern. Through previous background studies, Danish Modern characteristics were deduced as simpleness, functionality, regionality, amusement. This study analyzes his fifteen lighting lamp design projects based on these four characteristics of Danish Modern. In chapter one, the background, purpose and method of study are presented. In chapter two, the characteristics and historical background of Danish Modern are studied. In chapter three, the case study of the fifteen major lighting lamp design projects of Paul Henningsen are presented. The lighting lamp design characteristics of Paul Henningsen are then analyzed based off of the four characteristics of Danish Modern. As a result, the Danish modern characteristics of Paul Henningsen's lighting lamp designs are 1)Simpleness - Prototypes which are able to transform and develop for varied types of lighting, 2)Functionality - Human technological design that is able to adapt to anywhere, 3)Regionality - traditional craft graft used well on technology and materials 4)Amusement - rational and organic sensitivity. In chapter four, a synthetic conclusion is presented. This study discovered that Danish Modern had unique roles in the design process of Henningsem's design projects. Also, Danish Modern will continuously be a valid design principle that can be applied to a contemporary society.
