이 연구는 나도향의 소설 “벙어리 삼룡이”에서 장애인을 어떻게 인식하고, 장애인 주인공이 어떻게 대응하는가를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 구체적으로 신체에 대한 부정적 인식, 성적 욕망에 대한 긍정적 인식, 부정적 인식에 따른 삼룡이의 대응에 대해 고찰하였다. 먼저, Ⅱ장 신체에 대한 부정적 인식에서는 추한 외모, 조롱과 멸시, 신체에 대한 폭력과 학대 등으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 한국 사회의 장애인에 대한 뿌리 깊은 편견과 혐오감을 읽어낼 수 있었다. Ⅲ장 성적 욕망에 대한 긍정적 인식에서는 성에 대한 욕망과 사랑에 대한 적극적인 태도를 통해 육체적인 장애가 정신의 장애를 의미하지 않는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마지막 Ⅳ장 부정적 인식에 대한 삼룡이의 대응 양상에서는 부당함을 당하여도 인내하고 순응하는 소극적 대응의 경우 상전에 대한 고정적이고 관습적인 집착 때문으로 나타났다. 방화와 죽음을 통한 적극적 대응의 경우 장애인에 대한 차별과 신분, 계급의식의 파괴, 사랑의 완성으로 나타났다.

This study aimed to explore how are people with disabilities perceived and how the main character with disabilities react in the novel of Sam-lyong with deafness by Na Do-hyang. In details, it examined negative perceptions to body, positive perceptions to sexual desire, and Sam-lyong’s reactions to the negative perceptions. The negative perceptions to body in the chapter II were described as ugly appearance, mockery, contempt, violence and abuse to it. This showed deep prejudice and feeling of aversion to people with disabilities in Korean society. The positive perceptions to sexual desire in the chapter III showed that physical disabilities don’t mean mental disabilities through sexual desire and active attitudes to love. Sam-lyong’s reactions to the negative perceptions in the chapter IV were divided into passive ones and active ones. The passive reactions through patience and conformity to unfairness was due to steady and conventional obsession to the master. The active reactions through arson and death were shown as abolition of discrimination and class consciousness, and completion of love, to people with disabilities.
