The primary purpose of this study is to examine the history of witchcraft and witch-hunting between the late middle ages and early modem Europe. It is particularly focusing on the relationships between the gender and witch-hunting. Between the late 14th and the early 17th century more than one hundred thousand people, most of them women, were tried for the crime of witchcraft. They were prosecuted by secular and ecclesiastical courts in different parts of Europe. The geographical and chronological distribution of witch hunting cases throughout Europe was extremely uneven. There was not one but many causes underlying the strange and terrible phenomenon of the witch hunts. There was, however, a strong correlation between belief in witchcraft and religious belief. The rise of heretical movements had influence on the witchcraft. At the beginning of the witch hunting the accused were clergymen or other influential people. Accusations, however, had spread more widely to the populace. The witch hunting was an extremely complicated and diverse historical event. It reflected both elite and popular ideas about witchcraft. It also had both religious and social dimensions. The prosecution of women as witches occurred in a society in which men exercised substantial authority over women. The vulnerability of women also stemmed in part attitudes about women's sexuality and their role as mothers. Whatever the relevant factors, the response of Europeans in general, was to assume that women were peculiarly drawn to witchcraft and the devil. The history of the witch hunting provides the ideas about women, with fears about women and with the place of women in European society then.
