Disposable absorbent products such as baby diapers, sanitary napkins, and incontinence pads require good absorbency. Currently, they are made of cellulose fibers (i.e., pulp) and superabsorbent polymer (SAP). Pulp is used to absorb the fluids quickly from the body while SAP is used to retain the fluids to the maximum capacity. The present SAP-pulp pad poses several problems to the wearers. First, the SAP particles in the pad can migrate to the skin when they are exposed to the fluid. Second, the swollen SAP particles in the pad can block the fluid channels. The objective of this study is to suggest ways of developing a next generation of SAP-paper composite which is garment-like without sacrificing absorbency properties.
