이 글은 1980년대 후반 이후부터 1990년대 중반까지 한국 영화를 ‘공간’을 통해 분석하고 의미화하는 데 목적을 둔다. 1980년대 후반 전두환 정권의 붕괴와 세계적인 냉전 종식 및 서구와 자유화, 영화계의 변화 등은 한국 영화의 의미 분석에도 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 특히, 이 글은 당대의 변화 양상을 살펴보는 데 주요한 방법론으로 ‘공간’이 유효하다는 판단 아래, 다음의 세가지 차원에서 영화 분석을 시도했다. 첫째, 1980년대 후반 이후 한국 영화에서는 아파트 스펙타클을 재조명하기 시작했다. 근대화의 상징이자 가부장적 남성 질서의 표상으로 군림했던 아파트 스펙타클의 붕괴는 한국 영화에 아파트 내부 공간이 출현함으로써 가능해졌다. 중산층의 상징이던 아파트의 내부 공간이 출현하고, 그 안에 은폐되어 있던 ‘성’과 ‘가부장’의 문제들이 돌출함으로써, 아파트 스펙타클은 비판적인 탐색의 대상이 되었다. 둘째, 근대화의 과정에서 제대로 조명받지 못했던 노동 공간이 출현했다. 1980년대 후반 영화에서는 근대화 담론을 추인했던 이데올로기화된 노동 공간이 아니라, 그동안 은폐되어 왔던 열악한 노동 환경이 재현된다. 셋째, 근대화로 인한 도시 개발과 재개발의 내부 식민지, 서구화된 공간을 조명하되, 이러한 공간을 점유하며 살아가는 타자들을 재현함으로써 한국 영화는 도시화의 그늘에 가려진 내부 식민지의 문제를 비판적으로 탐색하는 장을 열었다.

The objective of this research is to analyze and signify the Korean film from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s through ‘space.’ In the late 1980s, the collapse of the Chun Doo-Hwan administration, the end of Cold War, liberalization with the Western societies, changes in the movie circle, etc. have significantly affected the analysis on the meaning of Korean film. Especially, considering that ‘space’ is an effective and major methodology to investigate the change pattern of the periods, this research attempted to analyze movies in the following three aspects: First, Korean film started to shed new light on A.P.T. spectacle after the late 1980s. The collapse of A.P.T. spectacle, which dominated as a symbol of modernization and masculine order of patriarchy, was possible as A.P.T. internal space emerged in the Korean film. With the emergence of the symbol of the middle class, inner space of A.P.T. and exposure of problems of ‘sex’ and ‘patriarchy’ that had been hidden inside, A.P.T. spectacle became the target of critical exploration. Second, labor space, which could not be highlighted properly during the process of modernization, appeared. In the late 1980s, movies reproduced poor labor environment that had been concealed, rather than ideologized labor space that ratified discussion on modernization. Third, by casting light upon internal colonialism of urban development and redevelopment due to modernization and westernized space, and reproducing others who live occupying such space, Korean films have opened an opportunity to critically explore problems of internal colonialism that was shadowed by urbanization.
