이 논문은 2015 개정 교육과정이 적용되는 초등학교 3～4학년군 ‘한 학기 한 권 읽기’를 학교교육과정에 적용하는 방안을 제안하였다. 학교 정규 국어 수업 시간에 책을 읽는 시간이 주어지는 것만으로도 현장의 반향이 큰 가운데 그간 아침 독서, 교과 독서, 도서관 연계 수업 등 학교별 독서교육이나 학생 개인적으로 이루어졌던 사적 영역의 독서 교육이 국어 수업 시간이라는 공적 영역으로 들어오면서 학교교육과정의 재구성 및 적용 방안에 대한 고민이 필요할 것으로 보인다. 한 학기 한 권 읽기는 학교 현장의 독서교육으로 진행되고 있는 지속적 읽기, 자발적 독서, 느리게 읽기, 온작품 읽기 등과 다르지 않다. 오히려 이 개념들에서 일부분씩을 모두 포함하고 있어서 현장의 독서교육을 학교라는 테두리 안으로 들여온 개념이라고 할 수 있다. 이에 개정 교과서에 반영된 독서 단원 구성 및 수업 운영의 유의점을 알아보고 학교교육과정을 재구성하는 데 도움이 될 만한 방안을 세 가지 절차로 구분하여 가능태를 제안하였다. 첫째, 통합인가 단독인가의 여부를 결정하는 단계이다. 독서 단원과 국어 교과 내 다른 영역과의 통합, 독서 단원과 타 교과와의 통합과 같은 통합 운영이나 단독 운영의 경우가 있다. 둘째, 독서 단원을 단계별로 집중하여 운영할지, 분산하여 운영할지의 여부를 결정하는 단계이다. 단계별 분산의 경우, 독서 준비 단계와 독서 단계, 독서 후 단계를 단원들 사이에 두어 분리할 수 있고 집중 운영을 결정하면 독서 단원을 한 단원으로 통째로 적용한다. 셋째, 적용 시기를 결정하는 단계이다. 적용 시기는 학기 초ㆍ중ㆍ후로 구분할 수 있으며 어느 시기에 하느냐에 따라 각각 장단점이 존재한다.
