오늘 그리스도인들은 모세의 율법을 지켜야 하는가? 아니면, 지킬 필요가 없는가? 이 문제는 중요한 문제이다. 이에 대한 답에 따라 그리스도인의 구원의 방법과 삶의 내용이 달라지기 때문이다. 이 문제에 대한 답은 크게 두 가지로 구분될 수 있다. 첫째는 모세의 율법을 그대로 다 지켜야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 둘째는 모세의 율법은 지킬 필요가 없다는 것이다. 그러나 이들을 검토한 결과, 이 두 견해는 다 문제가 있다. 따라서 이 논문은 이 두 견해의 문제들을 보완한 제3의 견해를 제시한다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 그리스도인들은 구약의 율법 특히 모세의 율법을 지켜야 한다. 모세의 율법은 하나님의 영감으로 기록된 하나님의 말씀이며(딤후 3:16 등), 예수께서 다 지켜야 한다고 했기 때문이다(마 5:17-20 등). 그러나 그 율법의 준수는 형식적 의미의 율법이 아니라, 율법의 본질적인 내용인 율법의 정신 곧거룩, 의, 선(사랑)이다. 이를 좀 더 자세히 보면 다음과 같다. 1) 모세의 율법중 도덕법은 하나님의 백성의 삶의 원리로서 그 내용은 거룩, 의, 선 곧 사랑이다(마 22:34-40; 갈 5:13-14; 롬 13:8-10 등). 그러므로 이 도덕법은 오늘날에도 그대로 지켜져야 한다(롬 2장; 3:31; 8:1-4 등). 이것은 영원히 변치 않는 하나님의 뜻이기 때문이다(마 22:34-40 등). 2) 율법의 형식적인 내용 특히 의식법은 하나님 앞에 속죄와 정화와 화목에 대한 것으로 이것은 예수님이 십자가에 죽으심으로 이루어졌다(히 10:17-18 등). 그러므로 오늘 그리스도인들은 이 의식법을 그대로 지킬 필요가 없다(갈 3:15-29; 4장). 그러나 그 의식법의 정신인 거룩과 정결은 예수 그리스도를 믿고 의지함으로 그리스도인의 삶 속에서 계속 지켜져야 할 것이다(요일 1:9 등 참조). 3) 시민법은 이스라엘 민족의 시민 생활에 관한 법으로서 오늘 역사와 문화가 다른 우리의 시대에 그대로 지킬 수 없는 것들이 많다. 그러나 그 시민법의 정신인 정의와 사랑은 오늘 그리스도인들의 삶 속에서도 지혜롭게 적용되어야 할 것이다(롬 12:1-2; 엡 5:15-17 등 참조). 이와 같이 율법의 형식적인 측면은 실체이신 그리스도가 오신 오늘 그리스도인들이 그대로 행할 필요가 없다. 그러나 율법의 본질적인 측면인 거룩과 의와 사랑은 타락한 인간성을 가진 인간은 자기 힘으로 이것을 행할 수가 없다(롬 7장 등). 그러나 오늘 그리스도인들은 계속하여 예수 그리스도를 믿고 의지함으로 이것을 행할 수 있다(롬 8:1-4 등). 그는 그리스도를 믿음으로 죄에서 벗어나 새사람이 되었고(롬 1-6장), 또한 삼위 하나님이 그와 함께 계시므로 그가 계속하여 성령을 따라 행할 때 이것을 이룰 수 있기 때문이다(롬 7-8장; 갈 5:16-26 등). 오늘 한국의 그리스도인들이 이와 같은 사실을 바로 알고 행할 때에 그들의 삶은 이 땅에서 하나님의 나라와 의를 이루고, 하나님의 영광을 드러낼 것이다(마 5:13-16; 6:33). 그리고 이것은 오늘 한국교회에 대한 신뢰도를 높이고, 그리스도의 복음 선교에도 도움이 될 것이다.

Should Christians keep the Mosaic Law of the Old Testament or not? This is a big issue, especially in Korea today, because the answer to this question directly affects both the way to salvation and the contents of Christian living. The answers to this question are divided into two general categories. The first is that Christians should keep the Law literally, and the other is that Christians should not or need not keep it. However, according to this research, both of these two views have problems. So this thesis presents a third view which complements the two views. The third view is as follows. Christians should keep the Mosaic Law because it is the word of God which is inspired by God’s Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16), and because Jesus Christ said that it should be kept wholly (Matt. 5:17-20, etc.). However, the keeping of the Law should not be too rigid or formal, but rather the essence of the Law, that is, the spirit of the Law should be kept. And the spirit of the Law is holiness, righteousness, goodness, and love (Rom. 7:12; Matt. 22:37-40, etc.). The more detailed explanation is as follows: 1) The moral law of the Mosaic Law should be kept as it is, because it is the moral principle of the people of God and it requires holiness, righteousness, goodness, and love (Rom. 2:6-16; 7:12; Matt. 22:37-40, etc.). 2) The formal aspects of the Law, especially the ceremonial law should not be kept literally (Gal. 3:15-29; 4:8-11, etc.), because the ceremonial law and its rites, which are for atonement, purification, and the reconciliation of the people of God, have already been accomplished by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Heb. 10:17-18, etc.). However, the spirit of the ceremonial law, which is for holiness, purity, and reconciliation of the people of God, should be kept even in the life of Christians today, because it is still required even for Christians today (1 John 1:9, etc.). 3) The civil laws of the Mosaic Law, such as the rules regarding the civil life of the people of Israel cannot be kept strictly today as our society is different from the society of ancient Israel. However, the spirit of the civil laws which is justice and love for one’s neighbors should be kept in the life of Christians today because it is also the spirit of the Law itself (Rom. 12:1-2; Eph. 5:15-17, etc.). The way of keeping the Law is this: to trust in and obey Jesus Christ always, because, though for a person to keep the formal aspects of the Law is in some degree possible, for a person to keep the essential aspect of the Law, that is, the spirit of the Law is not possible, because natural man is in a state of depravity (Rom. 7:7-25, etc.). Therefore, Christians today should always trust in and rely on Jesus Christ for keeping the Law, because when they trust in and rely on Jesus Christ they are released from sin and death, and accomplish the requirements of the Law by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1-4; Gal. 5:16-26, etc.). When Christians today in Korea understand and practice these truths, their lives will build the kingdom of God, accomplish the will of God, and give glory to God (Matt. 5:13-16; 6:33, etc.). And that will increase the trustworthiness of Korean churches and help to achieve the mission of the church.
