본고는 17세기 한국어의 의성어와 의태어에 대한 연구이다. 본 연구를 위해 필자는 『17세기 국어사전』과 『17세기 가사전집』, 17세기에 창작된 수필과 한글 편지 등으로 말뭉치를 구성하고 여기에서 의성어 5개, 의태어 99개를 추출하여 검토하였다. 그 결과 중세한국어와 마찬가지로 의성어는 아직 활성화되지 않았음을 확인하였다. 다양하게 나타나는 의태어는 형태, 통사, 의미의 측면에서 검토하였다. 먼저 형태면에서 의태어 어근에 접미사 ‘-□-’의 결합은 생산적이었으나 ‘-거리-’는 비생산적이었으며, ‘-대-’는 아직 나타나지 않았다. 그리고 유음반복어도 다양하지 않았다. 통사면에서 특정의 어휘와 어울리는 의태어가 있었으며, 의태어의 서술기능도 확인하였다. 그리고 의태어가 서술어로 쓰이는 현상에 대하여 의태어는 동작성을 지니므로 그 어근은 기원적으로 용언 어간과 구분되지 않았고, 어미가 없이도 서술어로 쓰일 수 있었으나 접미사 ‘-□-’에 의해 파생된 어휘가 새롭게 쓰임에 따라 의태어 어근과 ‘-□-’에 의해 파생된 어휘가 서술어로 혼용된 것으로 추정하였다.

This paper is about onomatopoeia and mimetic words of the 17th century Korean. For this study, I composed corpus with 17th Century Korean language Dictionary, Complete Works of 17th Century Gasa, essays and hangul letters were created in the 17th century. As a result, onomatopoeia was not activated just like Middle Korean. Variously appeared mimetic words were examined for morphology, syntax and semantics. Above all, as to the morphology, in combination with the mimetic words to the ‘-□-’ suffix were productive, but to the ‘-거리-’ suffix was not productive, and to the ‘-대-’ suffix was not existed. And also the analogous re-duplicated form was not various. And to the syntax, there were mimetic words matched well with specific vocabulary. And made it sure that the mimetic words have descriptive function. And also as to the phenomena, originally mimetic words root are used for predicate without conjugated ending stems, but as to the newly used vocabulary derived from suffix -□- are presumed that mimetic words root and derived vocabulary form -□- are mingled for predicate.
