Background: Monopolar radiofrequency is one of the first and most widely-studied non-invasive skin tightening treatments which has been proven effective in numerous trials. Previously, the authors have surveyed dermatologists who practice a specific monopolar radiofrequency device (Thermage® Inc., Hayward, CA) in Asians, to better understand the Objectives: In this updated study, we aimed to seek the respondents’ latest view on the effectiveness, practice patterns and complications of monopolar radiofrequency treatment in Asians. Methods: A Thermage® questionnaire, consisting of 15 questions, was distributed to dermatologists who have had more than 2 years of experience or have treated more than 100 patients with the monopolar RF device. Dermatologists who attended the annual Thermage® user meeting in September 2016 were asked about their experience with the device, and those who met the criteria above were invited to answer the questionnaire. Results: Asians in their 40s (89.3%) were considered to benefit most from Thermage® followed by those in their 50s (25.3%), 30s (14.7%), and 60s (1.3%).Skin thickness (70.7%) and the degree of skin laxity and wrinkles (66.7%) were chosen as the two most important factors in terms of responsiveness to monopolar RF.A high proportion of participants (61.3%) replied that the percentage of non-responders were less than 10%. Conclusion: We hope our data provide dermatologists further insight into effective skin tightening with monopolar radiofrequency.
