이 글에서는 웹소설이 `읽는` 소설에서 `보는` 소설로 소설로서의 존재태 혹은 존재방식을 변화시켰다는 데 초점을 두고 이러한 변화가 지닌 문화적 함의와 문제점, 그리고 그 속에 담긴 현대인의 특성과 의식변화에 대해 살펴보았다. 먼저 웹소설 스토리텔링의 특징을 문단 구성의 운문화, 스토리와 담론의 순정만화화, 연속극 형태로의 진화의 세 가지로 요약하고, 이를 중심으로 웹소설의 가능성과 생존방식에 대해 살폈다. 이전의 소설들이 작가의 이름을 걸고 주제의식 표출에 전력하여 그것으로 평가받았다면, 웹소설은 과거에는 단순하고 대중적이라고 손가락질 당했을 `오락성`을 표면에 내세우고 영역을 확장 중이다. 소설의 개념을 변질시킨 웹소설의 변화를 비판하기 이전에, 이를 웹에서 생존하기 위해 스스로를 변화시킨 웹소설의 자기 구명 전략이었다고 보면 문제는 달리 보일 수 있다. 이를 잘 읽히는 소설이 되기 위해 웹소설이 택한 전략의 하나로 이해할 수 있는 것이다. 이런 맥락에서 `보는` 소설로의 변화를 일종의 `문학적 허용` 혹은 `웹적허용`으로 보아줄 수 있을 듯하다. 과거에는 정동이 우리를 둘러싼 사물들과의 마주침에 의해 유발되었지만, 오늘날에는 그것이 모니터에서 이루어진다. 웹소설은 자투리 시간을 이용해 순간을 느끼고 순간순간 문화를 경험하고자 하는 현대인의 요구와 현대 문화산업이 맞아떨어진 지점에 놓여있다. 웹 콘텐츠의 융성을 각박한 생활 속에서 지금, 여기, 현재의 행복을 추구하는 현대인의 요구와 모바일 기술, 그리고 문화산업이 만나 이룬 결과 물로 볼 수 있는 것이다.
This paper have looked at the cultural implications of these changes and the differences in the nature of the modern people and the changing perceptions of the modern people, focusing on changing the way in which a web novel transform from `reading` novels into `showing` novels. This paper summarized the characteristics of the web novel storytelling as follows: `metrify in paragraph`, `adaptation into romantic comics`, `dramatisation toward soap opera format`, based on these characteristics, studied the existences and possibilities and the way it exists of the web novel. If previous novels were judged by the author`s name and the spirit of the subject, web novel is expanding the area with `fun` ostensibly. Before criticizing the changes in web novels that distort the concept of fiction, if you view it as a self-feeding of a web novel that has transformed itself to survive on the Web, the problem can be seen differently. In this context, it seems to be a form of `poetic licence` or `web licence` as a form of `literary licence.` In the past, the affect was triggered by the objects surrounding us, but today it is done on the monitor. The web novel lies in the meshes of modern people`s demands trying to feel a moment of experience and experiencing culture with odd hours. We can understand web content flourish is the result of modern people`s demands, mobile technology and modern culture industry meet, that here, the very moment what we exist: the needs of contemporary people who enjoy happiness.
