『김진옥전』은 환상성이 강한 고소설이다. 수중전쟁담이 『김진옥전』의 환상성을 높여주는 주된 요인이다. 수중전쟁담에서 나타나는 수중계는 지상계와 대등할 뿐 아니라 지상계와 더불어 교차적으로 배치된다. 한 마디로 말해, 수중계의 위상이 대단하다. 수중계가 아니고서는 주인공이 욕망을 구현할 수 없는 양상을 보이므로, 수중계로 인해 `욕망-성취` 구도가 형성된다고 할 만하다. `욕망-성취` 구도에는 두 개의 욕망, 즉 김진옥의 욕망과 서술자의 욕망이 들어 있다. 두 개의 욕망은 특별한 절차를 거쳐 하나가 된다. 즉, `욕망-성취` 구도가 환상적 장면을 끌어들여 삼각형 형태를 이루고. 이 삼각형 형태의 환상적 장면이 삶의 진실을 드러낸다. 환상미학 차원에서 볼 때 『김진옥전』은 두 가지의 의의를 지닌다. `反文化 지향과 인식의 새 틀 제시`와 `경계 해체와 우주론적 사유의 확장`이 그것이다. 서술자의 조종자가 작자층이라고 볼 때, 『김진옥전』 작자층이야말로 환상미학의 주체요 구현자이다.

Kimjinokjeon is a classical novel with a strong element of fantasy. Its illustration depicting an underwater war enhances its fantasy further. In the illustration, the underwater world is not only equal to the terrestrial world, but also arranged, intersecting with it. In a world, the underwater world claims considerable status. Since the protagonist cannot fulfill his desire without the underwater world, it is safe to say that the underwater world forms the “desire-fulfillment” structure, which contains two desires: one of Kim Jin-ok, and the other of the narrator. Their desires converge into one through a special procedure. That is, the “desire-fulfillment” structure forms a triangular shape by introducing a fantastical scene, and the fantastical scene in a triangular shape reveals the truth of life. The novel holds its significance in two aspects from the perspective of fantastical aesthetics: “anti-cultural orientation and presentation of a new perception framework” and “dissolution of a boundary and expansion of cosmological thinking.” Given that the narrator is manipulated by the writer, the writer of Kimjinokjeon is the subject and implementer of fantastical aesthetics.
