본고는 일본 고전문학에 나타나는 뱀의 상징성을 뱀눈 문양(蛇の目)과 관련지어 재조명 했다. 상대문학의 뱀은 주로 확대 과장한 외형적 특징을 이용해 영웅성을 획득하는 통과의례의 의미와 함께 수호신과 재앙신이라는 이율배반적인 상징의미를 갖는 것을 알 수 있다. 平安時代의 섬세하고 우아한 세계를 추구했던 분위기와는 달리, 뱀의 신체적 특징은 노골적으로 남근이라는 남성성의 상징이 되는 한편, 불교의 인과응보 사상, 육도윤회 사상 등과 맞물려 종교적, 교훈적 색채가 농후해지는 현상을 보이며 다양한 의미의 스펙트럼이 확대되었다. 그 결과 상고문학의 남성적, 공격적, 신적인 이미지는 퇴색되고, 불교와 접목되어 축생의 하나로 다뤄지거나 엽기적 음담패설의 대상으로 전락된 측면이 강하다. 중세문학에서는 뱀은 上代에 비해 왜소해지고 독자적 신위가 아닌 불법을 수호하는 주변적 신위로 격하되면서도 전쟁과 관련된 영웅성을 입증하는 뱀의 영력은 그대로 계승되고 있었다. 원시적이지만 강력한 영적 존재로 그려지는 상대 문학의 이미지를 향수하며 하나의 상징체계를 형성하고 있다. 이러한 재앙신과 수호신이라는 상징의미와 뱀신의 후예가 영웅을 낳는다는 三輪山 전설의 신앙이 呪符로써의 蛇の目 문양과 합치하면서 家紋으로 발전했으리라고 본다. 따라서 뱀의 공격성과 원추형 모습이라는 뱀 이미지의 대표성과는 상관없이 뱀의 모든 영력의 결정체로써 구슬과 같은 주술성을 상징하는 뱀눈이 家紋에 투영되었다고 주장하는 바이다.

This study has been reviewed the symbolism of the snake appearing in the classical Japanese literature in relation to the snake`s eye. In the ancient literature of Japan, it can be understood that snakes have an antinomical symbolic meaning of guardians and disasters as well as the meanings of the rites of passage through which to acquire heroism mainly through the use of the exaggerated external features. Unlike the atmosphere of the Heian era, which pursued a delicate and elegant world, the snake became blatantly a symbol of man, the penis because of the physical feature. With the Buddhist thought such as punitive justice, the eternal cycle of birth, etc, religious and instructional colors were enriched and the spectrum of the various meanings was expanded. As a result, the masculine, aggressive, and divine image of the ancient literature has been faded and it was treated as one of the humble animal with the Buddhism or fallen into the subject of obscenity. In the medieval literature, the snake succeeded to the snake`s spiritual power, which proves heroism related to war, even though it had been dwarfed as compared to the ancient literature and demoted as Buddhism guardian which does not have an original divinity. Embracing images the images of the ancient literature drawn as a primitive but powerful spiritual being, a symbolic system was formed. As the snake`s eyes combined with the symbols of the guardian and disaster and the Miwansan legend that the descendants of the snake god lays heroes it seems to be developed as a family crest. It is claimed that the snake`s eye, which symbolizes the crystal of all spiritual powers, was projected on the snake eyes of the family crest, regardless of the representive images of the snake like attackability and conical shape.
