이 논문은 읽기 연구의 효시로 평가받는 Huey(1908) 이후 2010년까지 읽기 연구에 영향을 미친 주요 이론들의 역사적 변천 과정을 살펴보고자 기획되었다. 이 연구에서는 읽기 이론의 복잡다단한 양상을 효과적으로 살펴보기 위하여 본격적인 논의에 앞서 유관 용어(패러다임, 이론, 모형)의 개념을 정리하고, 읽기 분야의 학문적인 성립과 시기 구분의 문제를 검토하였다. 그리고 20세기 읽기 이론의 변천 양상을 집중적으로 탐구한 세 편의 최신 연구(Tracey & Morrow, 2017; Handsfield, 2016; Unrau & Alvermann, 2013)를 선별하여 그 결과를 개별적으로 또 종합적으로 분석하였다. 이러한 일련의 작업을 통해 읽기 이론의 변천을 보는 관점과 그 영향, 세 연구에서 주목하는 주요 패러다임과 이론들, 읽기 이론의 최신 동향을 둘러싼 다양한 해석과 쟁점을 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 읽기 이론과 관련된 미결의 문제들을 네 가지로 정리하여 학계와 현장에 시사점을 제공하였다.

The purpose of this study was to review the changes of theories on reading from 1910 to 2010, after Huey(1908), using a historical perspective. For more effective discussion, this study first explored the concepts of paradigms, theories, and models, the various academic influences on the emergence of reading research, and some era issues in the field of reading research. Then, this study reviewed the historical changes on the major paradigms and theories of reading in the 20^th century synthesizing the results of three recent study. Throughout the review work, this study found out perspectives on reading theory and its influences on the interpretations of the history of reading research, some major paradigms and theories overlapped in three studies, and heterotypical interpretations on recent trends in reading. Four unsolved issues and suggestions based on the findings of the study were offered for further study.
